The Romy G parts kit I just bought has some surface rust and all sorts of grime on it. What should I used to get it clean and shiny?
How bad is the rust? Has it started to pit/eat the metal?
If it is just 'light surface rust', you can use very fine steel wool and WD-40 to remove it. Follow it up with a nice light rubdown of CLP.
Deeper/more established rust will need increasing strength of steel wool or hard brushes/grinder/dremel.
How are you planning on finishing it?
degrease it.....get rid of the heavy crud
assemble it on a reciver..
sandblast..........parkerize
parkerize and Moly resin

The rust will dissappear when you blast it before you parkerize it.

I sprayed mine down with CLP and wire wheel to the bad spots. I'm gonna blast and park mine after its built then maybe aluma hyde 2.

Simple Green and hot water is good to get the old grease/cosmoline/grime off the parts. Once it is clean, dry it in an oven (on "warm" setting!) or out in the hot sun, then oil with CLP to prevent (more) rust.
As others suggested, blasting and parkerizing will cure a multitude of cosmetic ills.....

Yeah, basically I got my parts kit but I dont have any build tools, so I need something to do while waiting for a build party to come along in my area. I figured I might as well clean it.

degrease/remove cosmo, planter box full of mineral spirits(paint thinner) on a hot day. scrub with a parts brush. all water based degreasers suck.

FUD. We used Simple Green at Lassen to clean up real messes. It works very well.

mineral spirits can be used on the wood also with no fear of swelling. i tried simple green in the auto trade when it first came out. it worked to some extent but not near as well as solvent based products. it does have the advantage of being non flammable and can be used indoors where fumes are a problem.
hell, you can use laquer thinner or acetone but you have to work fast before the plastic planter box melts.

You can use spray on brake cleaner and a small brass or steel wire brush, then rinse the brake cleaner good, next you either sand or bead blast to remove anything left.

I don't have the tools either.....yet. I'm building them now. It doesn't look very hard at all. I got some flats on Thrusday and from what I can tell the bending jig isn't really needed. The only "special" tool i'll need is the bolt cutter rivet tool.

Keep it away from plastics. T.C.E. from brownells works really well.

Laquer thinner to soak in. Use stiff bristled brush where u can and use brake cleaner to blast areas the brush can't get to

brake cleaner is safe for most plastic and rubber parts.(brakes nowadays have lots). carb cleaner is NOT.

I used Brakecleen to to degrease some stuff and it melted the plastic pan I was using to catch the excess.
