Hi there,

I've been wanting to learn to hunt for quite a long time, and this year I'm finally going to get out for deer season with some friends who are long-time hunters. I'm really excited.

I need a rifle!

The Sako Finnlight appeals to me, as do the Tikka T3. I prefer a synthetic stock and stainless barrel. I'm relatively flexible on caliber, but I'd prefer it to be something widely available, like .30-06 or .308.

I'm open to a rifle with or without optics. I'm aiming to spend <$1000 total with optics and have something that will last forever.

What have you got? (I'm interested in what you recommend/own, but more interested in what you'd like to sell me. :) )

find a good used mod 70 winchester in '06 there are many old hunting rifles out there that have only a couple of boxes of ammo through them. '06 will give you the range with heavier bullets that 308 can't. Check your reloading tables. Not discounting the .308 but as far as being versatile '06 wins for north american game. Find one w/iron sights & a scope(just in case). After 30/06, 270, 7mm mauser would be my choices for deer rifles, It ain't about having a fashionable gun it's about making the kill.

Just noticed something!! Hello to another cooper, your first name wouldnt be jim, would it?

It's Jon, actually. Nice to meet you.

Thanks for the advice re: caliber. Is .270 ammunition widely available? It strikes me that .30-06 might be the best choice since a number of my friends hunt with that caliber and it'd be easier for us to reload, etc.

Where would y'all recommend looking for used rifles, other than here. Gunbroker seems to have a lot of folks that won't ship to CA.

yes it is, and it's not in demand by the semi-auto crowd. You will sacrifice bullet weight but have a flatter shooting rifle with the range of '06. Good used rifles are like good women, they don't turn up often, so when you do find one grab it up. Seriously, you just missed a win 70 shadow model w/syn stock, don't know how much it went for but I am pretty sure it wasn't over 700. If you are patient and check this sight daily one will turn up.

.270 is a good flat shooting round. i have 30-06 because i also shoot Garands. keep an eye out for it on the forum. i'm sure you will come across on one. i will say that you will compete with me. i'm always looking for a second hunting rifle. :)

I have a rifle that has probably taken more deer in this country than any other rifle. The 30-30 lever action. An American legend:patriot:

I just nabbed a .270 T3 lite SS :) keep looking they turn up. There was a 30-06 in Sac that I don't think ever sold. I was surprised how many Tikka T3s turn up once I started looking.

Get a Model 70 in .30-06 w/ CRF
It's called "The Rifleman's Rifle." for reason.
Best bolt action rifle IMO.

Is .270 ammunition widely available?

It's the only thing that's consistently on the shelf at the local WallyWorld. You're not going to go wrong with any of the caliber's discussed so far.

Or you could move up to THE caliber in this class, the .280 Remington*. Now ammunition won't be quite as easy to find (translation: d*mned hard -- Ed.), but you don't rise to uber-uber coolness without some distinguishing factors, eh wot?

* Some may say the .280 Ackley Improved is the cat's meow, but that's a fine, golden hair that should be split over several drams of a fine single-malt Irish.

amen to that brother. controlled feed in any position, strong as all hell, enough rifle to get the job done and then some.

I hear them fellas in the bay area like them teekers 'cause the name is sooo cute.

.280 ackley improved, wow, you belong to a very select club of people shooting that baby do you have one of the m70's originally chambered for that?

. ... do you have one of the m70's originally chambered for that?

No. A pre-64 M70 originally chambered for the .280 Ackley Improved is something I'd be somewhat interested in, though. :)

Seriously, I'd grab a M70 Lightweight in .280 in a heartbeat, if I ever *saw* one. I have a M77 and a M700, both rechambered to Ackley Improved, and I've started hunting for a M700 Mountain Gun to do the same to.

The 100-200 fps you can gain from the Ackley Improved puts it pretty darn close to 7mm Mag territory, without some of the drawbacks. Seems to be inherently accurate, and part of the fun is the quest for 'best' from among many 'betters'.

Jack O'Connor can keep the .270. :)

I bought a .270 version new last Friday, so I'm no longer in the market. Thanks, everyone.
