View Full Version : Going for a PSL Dragunov!

Just wanted to blatantly brag and share: I am going to get a PSL Dragunov. ;-)

Found a couple for sale online. I checked all posts on legality, and the seller is saying he did it before, by removing the butt stock. According to the flow chart this is cool, and I've seen other posts where they did this. Then I can install a bullet button, and attach the butt stock.
Again, I've seen posts that this has been done before but please don't hold back at sharing your thoughts on this.

Anyone in the SF Bay area can recommend an FFL for a rifle like this? I got my handgun through JD security. Great guy, but he is a bit out of my way (far east San Jose) plus I don't know if he is cool with going this route...

Thanks for your thought, calgunners!

Hate to burst your bubble newbie, but a PSL isn't a Dragunov.....so while your new toy is cool, you are calling it by an incorrect name

PSL is built on RPK reciever, kinda like an AK chambered in 7.62x54r

Dragunov (SVD) is totally different, super rare, and super $$$$

Rogers Relics it good to go !

OK OK I know. It is a Romak3/PSL sniper rifle. But I shall call it Dragunov none-the-less. I don't think I want to spend 10 grand on a real one.... yet

Thanks for the Roger Relics hint by the way, I have seen the name pass by before, now you mention it.
Thanks!

You can keep calling it a Dragunov, but everyone that you tell it to will think you are ignorant.

Just call it a "Drago-knockov" and people will assume you said Dragunov
;)

Congrats on your new purchase, I hope you have fun with it.

I already have one.

I love it - the only bad parts are 1) ammo and 2) the scope. Not bad per se, but they are the weak points when it comes to accuracy.

+100 for Henderson!!! Their price is like $300 LESS than everyone else!!! They are really good guys, very easy to work with; don't ship wrong items; no arrogance/attitudes whatsoever. Normally, a company with superior product & high demand tend to have HUGE ego problems, because they can get away with it, to a point. Henderson? NADA. They built me one of their gorgeous AK-101's last year, and it's truly a work of art (relatively speaking, of course) and probably the first carbine I'd grab in an emergency. They even go an extra step and coat all the 'friction' points on the FCG & bolt with copper anti-seize- just like Glock does on their disconnect ramps - for smooth break-in. Class Act.

LOL thanks I might just use that.
It will be a Dragunov to ME anyway. Or I will use quotes like a "Lay-zur" like the Austin Powers movies...

Beers for impactco are on me!! :D

Confederated Arms. Here's the guy's contact email: r-glatz@hotmail.com

Rob has been very good at making sure his customers are happy.

Price for the stock and forend isn't cheap ($250 last I checked) but it's quality. The buttstock is a real Soviet Dragunov stock that's been modified to fit the PSL.

I like my set a lot!

And +1 for Henderson customer service. Those guys rule.

As soon as I sell some stuff, I'm picking up one of these--PSL-54C model--from another Calgunner.

I've always wanted one of these.

Sooo...if anyone needs a reasonably-priced Aimpoint 3X magnifier, EOTech 511, or some ammo....check the respective sections on here:thumbsup: (shameless plug over).

Here's my contribution. I redid the handguards with some home brewed stain, installed Rob's Drag stock, internal mag lock (I forget the name, but it's old), Tabuk flashhider, Harris bipod and adapter, and an 8x Belarus scope.

My only complaint is the stock. It's not adjustable to length of pull, but I think Rob is working on that. It's a mix of polimer and alloy making it a very solid stock. It also came with the handguards, which were great, but I'm not a big fan of plastic. Other than that, it's a great stock and a great rifle. I'm very happy with it. You'll be very happy with one.

In my experience, it's a 2-3 moa rifle and that is with my handloads. As the spaghetti thin barrel heats up, it's worse. It is a cool looking rifle but it's not a very accurate weapon. After all, it's just a big AK. YMMV.

I am getting 2-3 moa as well with 150gr Prvi FMJ, 47gr Varget, Prvi brass, and Remington LR primer.

My load with similar result was 45gr Varget, CCI 34 primers, Prvi 150gr SPBT bullets & Prvi brass.

what in general can be done to improve or at the least maintain accuracy out to further distances

I can second that. once the barrel heats up it changes drastically. dont get me wrong its a fun gun to shoot. just dont expect it to be a tack driver. m76 8mm is the big ak:thumbsup:

Shoot slower. Letting the barrel cool for 1-5 min per shot yields much better accuracy. However, it's a designated squad marksman rifle, not a sniper rifle. The idea is to suppress a target with reasonable accuracy while a squad maneuvers/flanks target.

You're going to love your PSL. For the cost of the rifle and rounds they are just a blast.

With the Check silver tips I'm, getting 2in groups at 100 yards. Using 7N1 I'm just over an inch. However 7N1s are pretty spendy.

My target of choice are clay birds from the trap range. I spread them over the rifle range out to 600 yards and have a blast.

For best accuracy you do need to space your shots and keep the barrel as cool as you can. Remember this rifle is designed to hit human sized targets not bullseyes.

+1 alot of peple think PSL's are the bee's knee's and are " sniper rifles " but sadly they are just overgrown WASR's :( , they are innacurate for what they are suposed to do. The barrel and receiver kills it. If your gonna investe money on a commie sniper rifle , invest it on a yugo M76 , milled receiver, heavier, heavy barrel in 8mm.

I agree that the PSL is a DM rifle, all I ask is that it be able to consistently hit man sized targets at 300+ meters. For precision, a bolt gun is definately the bee's knees, i just like the idea of having a bit more range or consistency than a typical battle rifle.

Man, you guys are really making me want to get a PSL! But I have a couple of questions?

1) Where can I find extra PSL mags?

2) How's the standard 4X scope that comes with the rifle?

3) Will the standard AK bullet button work on the PSL? Also, it looks like you have to drill out a rivet to install the AK BB? Is that going to make it a PITA to re-configure it back to it's original form if I move to another state that actually values our constitutional rights?

Man, you guys are really making me want to get a PSL! But I have a couple of questions?

1) Where can I find extra PSL mags? There was a vendor a few months ago that had four and a pouch for $60. J&G Sales has them individually here:

http://www.jgsales.com/product_info.php/p/romanian-fpk-psl-magazine,-new-10-round-/products_id/1673?SID

2) How's the standard 4X scope that comes with the rifle? Adequate for shooting man sized targets. Not great for paper. It has a really cool reticle for estimating distance based upon a short european guy.

3) Will the standard AK bullet button work on the PSL? Also, it looks like you have to drill out a rivet to install the AK BB? Is that going to make it a PITA to re-configure it back to it's original form if I move to another state that actually values our constitutional rights? The standard locks work fine. I would recommend a Solar lock since you do not need to mod the rifle at all and is easily reversible in about 10 seconds.

Thanks for all the feedback, people!
The reason I got it was for looks (Dragunov knockoff) and for the price you have to pay and the fun it must be to shoot!
Going to look into that Solar lock. It should be shipping next week!

Well I have it! I was a bit disappointed in the way Hendersons shipped it, the box was all cut open, held together with some tape and overall battered up. The FFL (Roger's relics in Santa Clara, they are great!) didn't even open up the box!
Anyway, the contents did not seem to be damaged and I tried it out at Chabot gun club which I liked as well. Took some time to get the scope zeroed out, as I never done that before... But with some trial and error it started working, was starting to shoot 5-6" groups I think.
Wow this gun is FUN. Serious FUN. After the range visit, I ordered two spam cans online, 880 bullets for about $180, and a decent carrying case. See the picture of my baby :)
I don't care too much about insane accuracy, it can put a man down from a loooong distance that's good enough for me (for starters, I uphold the right to get something high tech and modern). It's cheap and FUN! I like the pure raw effectiveness of this rifle. Am already considering a Mosin Nagant to go with it, this 7.62x54R is an awesome deal. Does not hurt too much, in recoil and in the wallet, yet packs a serious punch to say the least :)

Thanks for the scope link! I do not believe I will ever get bored with this rifle, I do not think anyone who just smiles at the thought of just shooting one will ever regret it either...

So the total cost was:
rifle from Henderson, incl shipping (no tax, they ship from NV): 783.75
DROS: $65
jgsales sell tin cans of ammo with 440 rounds: $82

Hence, the value for fun factor: ..... priceless! :)

oh and I forgot to mention the "bullet button" from solartactical.com
http://www.solartactical.com/product.sc?categoryId=2&productId=24 to make it all legal. I just looked at the henderson website and they just now started to install the solar magazine lock now for CA orders.. They shipped it to me with the stock removed. This makes things even easier and probably cheaper!

WOW youre not kidding. Anymore flex i woudl say its a limp piece of spagetti. The only reason i never got one was because i never cared for the stock. I have large hands and that stock is probably one of the most uncomfortable stocks to hold IMO.
I really thougth these rifles would be a lot more accurate. Most rifles can do what these scoped rifles do with open sights. pretty sad if you ask me
