Chose "winter" because it just looks neat. I think it turned out well for a first attempt.

Next to nothing. SKS things are inexpensive. Fun 7.62 to shoot. Poor mans SOCOM.

I like the effect. But aren't the SKS's with detachable magazines a HUGE no-no here in California?

Yes, SKS's with detachable magazines are illegal in CA. Good thing mine is fixed. Technically my rifle is a Yugoslavian M59/66, not an SKS.

You could run a detachable magazine if you want then since yours is not an SKS.

What did you do to the front end on that? Looks like you cut the barrel? What about the front sight? List the mods please!

-Shortened the barrel to 17.25". Removed bayonet and grenade launcher.
-Increase the gas port hole and shortened the recoil springs to cycle action with shortened barrel.
-Moved,cut top off of, and rotated backwards front sight back all the way to the gas block.
-Put ambidextrous safety on.
-Drop bolt mod.
-8 to 4 O'Clock port job.
-U.S. made trigger, Piston, Magazine, Follower, firing pin.
-Removed central mounted rear sight and added rear mounted Tech brand sight.
-UTG front Tri-Rail with custom fabricated bottom rail.
-Waterproof 2X red dot sight.

I liked the Yugoslavian M59/66 and the 7.62X39 round, but the rifle was MUCH to long and awkward to handle and the rear sights were awful. Much more handy now and more pleasing to the eye. Accuracy has not been effected by the barrel chop. Still can hit a 100 yard target the same.

I would love to drop the mag, but the problem is that the SKS is listed by name in the CA ban list and even though an M59/66 is not technically an SKS, it has never been tested in a court to my knowledge and I don't want to be the test case. Unless I get the OK from a CAL GUNS Lawyer I would be afraid to have a detachable mag on this gun.

Oh good, I thought I was losing it there. I had to send mine out of state long ago. But of course, it was an SKS. So it is legal to modify a yugo to take detachable magazines? Is there any way to modify it to take regular AK mags?

Specifically this needs to be added for SKS-with-detachable magazine questions:

12276(a)(11) SKS with detachable magazine.

The Yugo m59 and m59/66 are special, untested cases, and are not technically "SKSs".
