My good friend's brother in law, an Alaska resident, was recently in California and had a chance to shoot my rifle. He liked it a lot - so much that he wanted to buy it. Unfortunately for him, I sold it yesterday. So I told him I'd build him a suitable replacement.

What I want to build him:

1. Upper with side-charging handle
2. Railed free-float handguard
3. CQB barrel - 14.5 w/flash hider or 16"

I think his budget is around $1500. I'm leaning towards a Vltor CASV-EL, since I've got one and he liked it a lot. But other suggestions are gladly accepted.

What side-charging handle uppers exist? Anyone got any links?

Oh - and no Noveske. Sure, they are fine rifles, but I refuse to support $1600 uppers without BCGs. Not a single person on this forum needs any of the snake oil juiced onto these uppers, and as great as they may be, c'mon....$1600 for an empty upper? Please.

$1500....hmm

Does it have to be a side charging upper?

You could do this

And this

You would have $400+ left.

Regarding Side charging handle - Not required, but that would be ideal.

Part 1: SI Defense Lower Price: $130 Vendor: Cactus Tactical
Part 2: CMMG LPK Price: $70 Vendor: Evil Black Rifle Shop
Part 3: Side-Charging Piston Upper Price: $1475 Vendor: Addax Tactical
Part 4: Magpul CTR Stock w/Tube: $157 Vendor: Sacramento Black Rifle
Part 5: Magpul Front/Rear MBUS: $92 Vendor: Addax Tactical

Total cost w/out shipping: $1924

Anyone got a pic of an Addax side-charging upper with CTR stock I can send to my buddy?

I love my side charger. It is billet, made by ASA, and non-recipricating. The handguards are free floating and sit on the barrel nut. They are also 2 piece, I love them.

The side-charging upper is $300+ alone. That's already a substantial chunk of the money for the rifle. It's nice, but I don't think it's $300 nice. It also exposes the upper to particulates more than a standard upper. Just food for thought.

I like lightweights at 14.5" and even 16"... If you can find a Sabre mid-length 14.5", that might be the way to go. The hammer forged Centurion Arms 16" is also fantastic.

You need to definitely skip the CASV, though. :p DD lite is the way to go from a weight & functionality perspective.

I applaud your no-noveskeism. :) Back when they weren't priced astronomically they were an excellent choice. Now? No thanks.

$375 retail from ASA with a Young Mfg. Match / Light Weight Bolt Carrier Group. I don't think their website lists it with a BCG, but I have ordered them from ASA, and they come with the Young Mfg. Match/Light Weight Bolt Carrier Group.

I equip the Addax Side Charger GPU, with a Young Mfg. Chrome Match Full Auto Bolt Carrier Group.

Right about $100 more than a normal AR Mil-Spec upper receiver with a standard bolt carrier group and charging handle.

Not a bad deal at all in my opinion.

Not saying you don't have a point about the introduciton of particulates, but I have seen the upper also expell most of it right back out during operation, from the side charging slot.

That's significantly less than I thought it was. My recollection was it was $200-300 more than a forged upper. $100 more is nothing.

Carry on. :)

Glad to see you got her together.

I think you were the one who got her together. That is the old pic before the barrel nut was tightened and without one of your A2 flash hiders ;)

Group? When I ordered all I got was the carrier with a nicely staked key... then again I am not complaining seeing as how it is awesome and you hooked me up with a bolt
