Here was an interesting read from the European Parliament, dated 1998.
Its a bit long, and there are many links but, it is worth the time invested.
There are interesting and disturbing parallels between this report, and what we have happening here today.

I read an abstract by a Professor at MIT that studies surveillance technoligies back in 2000. Back then he wrote, due to the lowering cost of memory and data acquisition it wouldn't be long before a persons entire life could be recorded and saved in central gov't location. Included in the persons life documentation would be all school records, medical records, any encounter with LE including traffic violations and the cops notes and video of traffic stop, all banking credit card transactions including bank surveillance video inside bank and ATM due to face recognition. Travel records, airlines and hwy surveillance cameras that pick up your license plate, insurance investigations ie applications for life / car insurance. Online activities, web searches, emails? Might not be there yet but on it's way, well change is good --right?
This type of policing and militarization of police, and the security branches of federal government, are exactly opposite of what this country was/is founded on. As long as the courts continue to allow this course, I can only conclude, we are being driven to something other than our beginnings. We are rotting from the inside out.
