What kind of problem would I run into if I were to take a standard 20" barrel and cut it down to 18"? Will that alter the timing of the gun? Will it make it unreliable? Will it just do nothing? I was considering taking a 20" and making it a 18" SPR barrel, just wondering if my plans would pan out into success or fail miserably. Thanks all.

Having the gas block further forward on the barrel is actually better since the pressure will be less and over time it won’t erode the gas port as quickly. I'm sure Randall will give you a better explanation.

You may have to open up the gas port a teeny tiny bit. +1 for AR15barrels.

Works fine... cut, recrown, thread, open gas port...

You'll want to pick someone to do it that's done a few before. Randall has seen a couple. If you're in NorCal m24armorer is a good choice, too.

Thanks for the advice. I look into it.
