View Full Version : What does 160 rounds worth of carbon look like?

With an FDE colored inside-upper, the filth of 160 rounds really shows up well. Much more so than on a standard black AR. Check out what a day at the range did:

Lookin good! Is that level of brass shaving normal??

what lube are you using? I recently switched to Slip 2000 EWL and noticed I don't get as much buildup as before (was using Breakfree CLP).

BTW - thanks for the tip. Painting the interior of your upper a light color is a great way to see how clean/dirty stuff really is.

Looks pretty normal. Is this the level of shaving you asked about here (http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=187999)? If so, you are OK. What you need to be concerned about is small chunks of brass that could stop the bolt from going into battery. The shavings in the picture above are way to small to cause problems and are perfectly normal.

And now, back on topic....

Actually, that's perfectly on-topic. I've spent a good 500 hours cleaning M16/AR15 rifles, but all in standard black. I'd never seen brass like this before, and while it didn't concern me I was pretty amazed at what the grime looks like when it isn't masked by a black backdrop. I cleaned the bolt but will keep the chamber area uncleaned until I start to get cycling issues. I am interested to see what kind of build up is required to get an AR to start acting funny.

A lot. I have an upper that's only been lubed for about 3k rounds. My buddy has one going on 5k. No issues.

They don't look that bad, either... keeping it lubed tends to migrate gunk out.

Those feedramps are fine for what we do....we are not crawling into caves or running around firing full auto or three shot bursts for extended periods of time...and if use you Pmags....no prob.

I did an unofficial test on my AR to see how many rounds does it take before cleaning or lubing for it to malfunction... It started to to have FTE and FTF around 700 rounds!

That's hard core. I dunno if I can maintain the will power to keep it up for that long, but we shall see!

You are correct on two of your three statements. M4 receiver, non-M4 bbl, but about 300 rounds without an issue so I'm ok so far. I did a lot of searching for anyone posting experiences with a non-matched setup like mine, but all I could find were warnings. I figured I'd see how it all works and so far, it works perfectly fine.

God, that's GROSS! I understand where you're coming from, but I could never bring myself to let my ARs get that dirty. No, I don't baby my guns--I have no problems throwing them down into the dirt (hard--like the last time I tried to qualify expert rifleman and had a FTF on the last timed run of the day--some parts popped off and flew four lanes over) and shooting them till they jam, but this is just beyond my ability to resist cleaning!
