I think we missed this one. Did some searching and couldn't find another post with this story. Interesting interview with a scholar.

I think I want to throw up. So, you're not a gun owner and you're not with the NRA. That makes you believable. What if he isn't with the NRA but is a gun owner? Does that make him unbelievable?

Here is a thread discussing Mr. Jacobs: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=171214

Old news, really.

Jacobs is an academic, and I wish all the d*d politicians would listen to him. Jacobs doesn't seem to be ideological about guns - he just recognizes that all the laws have had none of the effects the proponents have claimed they would have. There's just no way that gun control can 'work'.

if there were only 1000 guns in the entire country then yes gun control would work to a certain point. criminals would do everything possible to get their hands on guns no matter what.
remember what Chris Rock said:
"We need bullet control, you know why? because if a bullet cost $5,000 there would be no more innocent bystanders"

ok but seriously anti-gunny people need to head out to the range and understand guns instead of just talking out of their A $ $

Just adding to what you said about criminals doing everthing possible to get the 1000 guns.

The market ALWAYS wins. If there were only 1000 guns in the entire country and the demand was still there by people willing to break the law more would be smuggled in or made illegally and the price would go up according to demand. Cell phones and drugs are illegal in prison but can still be had for the right price.

The only way to have only 1000 guns in the country would be for us to live in a super max like prison state but then if we did not have our amazing Constitution we would be approaching that fate. Big government theorist and Socialist and far right wingers do not believe in the free market so they will never understand this and continue to kick a dead horse.

Remember, there were about 100000 registered guns in UK before the total ban.Now there are over 2million unregistered guns roaming around in UK. Gun control NEVER works, it only hurts the law abiding and innocent.

If the guns were not registered then how did they come up with the 2 mil figure.

I'm a little surprised that they put this guy on national television.

As a general rule, intelligent dissenting voices aren't heard from in this debate.

His book sounds like it could have a corollary in this law review article:

http://lawreview.law.wfu.edu/documents/issue.43.837.pdf

Boiled down there is at the very least a 400 year supply of firearms in this country, the track record of laws requiring registration show massive non-compliance, any law banning firearms outright depends on the modification or overturning of Heller.

The fact that gun control does not and will not work doesn't deter the anti's in the least, because they're not interested in reality, they have a nifty theory that they're absolutely sure will work, because, well, it just will!

Check out the law review article I linked to.

The author goes into some detail about the failure of registration/surrender schemes, both here in the US and abroad.

2mil is an estimate the British were using, the guns are coming from Eastern Europe. the attached video shows over 300K unregistered guns as of 07. did not feel like searching too much
