Sarco has R.I Compact .45 1911s for 350 bucks. It has a 3 1/2 inch bull-barrel.
Ordered one this week. What do some of you think about this gun?

How did you order, did you have to call them? Also, how much was shipping to CA?

Thanks. Even with shipping, it still might be a good deal.

$408.29 shipped. Add a 100 bucks for transfer. That kinda takes the edge off the good deal. But hey, what we gonna do. Man, a 100 bucks for paperwork. S@#!.

yeah its gonna end up around $500 out the door.

Ammo bros in cerritos regularly carries RIA 1911s they are in the $430-450 range.

I'm getting the GI model next week from them, price was only $319 a few months ago, i figured I would jump on it while it was still low $339 plus shipping, FFL and tax, should be somewhere around $450-$500 out the door.

Apparently the Tactical isn't on the "safe" list. Shame.

Are you sure? I ask because several "Rock Island" 1911s are listed by name, but the Tactical isn't one of them.

I bought one. I ordered it through River City Gun Exchange in Sacramento. So, they are legal.

I may have gotten a lemon, mine was a pos, so I sold it.

Agreed. The Tactical is available in CA, I have one (although it's back at Advanced Tactical in Nevada - if you want to know the details, PM me).

Wow. So what is the quality of these handguns?

I heard nothing but good things about them, so I bought the Tactical model. It just would not feed. This thing wouldn't feed with Kimber, Les Baer or Chip McCormick mags either.

I spoke to one of the honchos in Nevada and he sent me a couple of free magazines.
Apparently, in the fine print somewhere it states that the pistols are guaranteed only to work with the supplied/factory magazines. WTF?

It didn't matter though, it still wouldn't feed reliably, so I took a loss and sold it back to the shop where I bought it.

So, maybe mine was a lemon, but I'm done with RIA's. If I can't trust a new pistol, it's just an expensive paperweight.

My Tactical had problems with anything except Wilson Combat 47Ds - once I used those it worked well. When I sold it to a new-to-1911 fella as his first I gave him all the ACT-MAG mags I had that supposedly work with it but don't. It's an OK gun for $450, but nothing spectacular. That same $450 put into a CZ buys you a hell of a lot more/better gun IMHO.

A coupla things: sub-Commander-sized 1911's are nasty little perversions of the original design. When they work, they are marvels of modern engineering. When they don't...well, the 1911 wasn't supposed to work that way anyway!

(Full disclosure - I just bought, this morning, a Springfield Ultra Compact with a 3.5" barrel. )

As for Rock Island -- I own one of the full-size High Standards -- which are made by Armscor (nee Rock Island) in the Philippines. It is a very accurate, very reliable bare-bones 1911. But at the rate they churn these things out, it appears to be luck as to how good a specimen you actually wind up with.

So - combining Armscor/Rock Island's QA with the challenges of the ultra-compact 1911 setup -- you are asking for some headaches IMO.
