I have been searching and reading through as many posts as I can find regarding the legality of muzzle brakes here in California. From what I have been able to determine, in regards to a muzzle brake for a mini-14, tyhey are legal as long as the item is listed as a muzzle brake by the manufacturer (and not as a flassh hider). Does anyone out there have any kind of actual documentation from the DOJ on this? If I do install one, I would really like to be able to keep a letter from them stating its legality along with my other firearm documentation.

Also, in regards to the legality of a muzzle brake, is there any difference between getting the kind that slips over the sight, and one that goes onto the end of a threaded barrel? I think I saw something about a threaded barrel being illegal, even if nothing is attached to it...

Lastly, if anyone can point me to a good thread on style muzzle brake for a 580 series Ranch Rifle, that would be awesome.

Thanks, and sorry again for re-hashing a topic I know has been discussed about a billion times.

Threaded barrels are only illegal on handguns.

There is some info on muzzle brakes on the AW flowchart (http://www.calguns.net/caawid/flowchart.pdf) back page.

I seem to remember that a muzzle brake has an inside diameter significantly larger than the bore diameter where a flash hider is the same or nearly the same diameter as the bore. (I'm sure someone will come on with more precise information for you)

I have that completely backwards. Apologies for anyone who I may have misled.

The muzzle brake I.D. on the Hakim rifle is not significantly larger than the bore diameter. The Hakim is perfectly legal in CA. May be other examples but that is the one I know.

Typically the muzzle brake will have an opening about the same diameter as the bore.

I don't know about this specific issue, but in general don't expect to find anything from DOJ that says 'this is what is legal'. Even if they said it, there's no guarantee it would be correct information or that it would hold any weight in court. If you bought it as a brake and not a flash hider it would be very difficult for anyone to claim otherwise. You'll be fine.

I'm looking at the "Bushmaster Threaded Izzy Muzzle Brake" found at

http://www.bushmaster.com/products.asp?cat=8

Is there any way to know in advance of ordering it whether this will work on a 580 series Mini-14? I'm not sure if the barrel of the mini is compatible...
