View Full Version : Sighting in My Spike's 22lr Upper???

I took my new AR with its' .223 upper AND .22lr upper out to Angeles yesterday. Had very little problem getting the iron sights sighted in on the .223.

But when I went over to the pistol side and swapped the upper out for Spike's 22 upper, at about 30 yards I was 2 feet to the left and probably 3 feet high:confused: I ended up raising the front sight way more than I would think necessary, to the point where I thought it might pop right off the mount. I also had to move the rear so far over to the right that it is now probably only 3 or 4 clicks from hitting the side of the sight housing.

This can't be normal right? Is my front sight not on right or something?

I want to leave the 22lr upper with iron sights since it's really going to be a plinker and for indoor range shooting so a scope would be overkill, so I want to figure out what's going on here.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

TIA

Here's a link to an auction for one like what I got. In fact this is the same vendor I bought mine from.

Sounds like a problem with your rear sight.
Are you using an airsoft rear sight?

Hmmmm... not sure. It was what came on the .223 AR I purchased from a fellow Calgunner.

Here are two pics that show it.

It seems "real" but I'm new to AR's and don't have anything to compare it too.

I can not tell anything by the picture.

Did anybody else shoot it? The reason I ask is it could be a"nut behind the wheel" issue. That as not meant to be a attack, but a new shooter issue.

I can say from experience, that I bought some airsoft sights and mounted them on my first spikes gun and well, I found out they were good for looks only. They would not align properly. Then I tried some MI (relatively cheap, but good) sights on the same gun, things aligned much better and accurately.

One thing I didn't quite make clear is that when I was shooting the .223 upper, I used the same sight and had no problem hitting a 8" plate at 50yrds.

When i swapped uppers, I put the sight onto the Spike's 22lr and that's when the problems began.

Would an airsoft sight work on a .223 upper but not a .22lr?

Is there any way to tell what the sights are (AS vs. Real)?:confused:

Hmm... I had a new 5.56 upper that did that, but not that bad. The manufacturer replaced it free and said it was a canted front sight post (front sight post on barrel not inline with upper's rear sight).

This sounds maybe like what I'm dealing with. Is there an easy way to tell if that's the problem? Wondering if a local gunsmith may be gettinga visit...

22lr and .223/5.56 will be close, but not dead on at 30 yds. I do not think it is your sight anymore.

Spend some time around here:

Try a different several different types of ammo (yeah, I know easier said then done lately). But stay way from Remington.
I have read in a few places that different 22lr ammo will perform very differently in the gun.
I know when I shoot Fed Bulk (for which I'm sighted in for) my impact is significantly off with Stingers and one other CCI I can not remember this early in the AM.

I can see how going form .223 to .22lr might lead to some elevation problems, but the 4' to the left thing still doesn't make sense to me.

Here are a couple photos of the sights. Maybe they'll help out in this discussion.

The front sight is backed out (up) way more than the one on my .223 upper. Maybe this isn't a big deal... but seemed strange to have to raise it this much.

The rear sight way over to the right to compensate for my shots landing 4' to the left of where I was aiming.

The rear sight was all the way down as well.

The FSB might be canted, call Spikes and tell them what you're experiencing.

I had a big problem yesterday sighting in my .22lr spikes upper as well. I am using a Colt Carry handle adjustable rear sight. Shooting to right as well. :(

I'm keeping an eye on this thread as I bought a Spike's M4 22lr upper directly from Spikes that I haven't had a chance to shoot yet.

It was because of the 22 round magazine. I had them ship the magazine to my dad in AZ and I ordered a couple 10 rounders straight from Spike's.

At any rate, I got my upper back from Spike's today... well let me say I got an upper back today. It didn't have the same flash hider on it that I'd originally sent in and the barrel was dirty.

So I'm wondering if they just sent me a different upper back?

I'll drop them a line and ask I guess, but if it works, I guess I don't much care.

No mention of charging me so I guess that's good. I won't get to shoot it until next week probably so I'll try to remember to post one last update on this.

But I have high hopes!
