EXCLUSIVE: Senator's husband's firm cashes in on crisis

Feinstein sought $25 billion for agency that awarded contract to spouse

By Chuck Neubauer (Contact) | Tuesday, April 21, 2009

On the day the new Congress convened this year, Sen. Dianne Feinstein introduced legislation to route $25 billion in taxpayer money to a government agency that had just awarded her husband's real estate firm a lucrative contract to sell foreclosed properties at compensation rates higher than the industry norms.

Mrs. Feinstein's intervention on behalf of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. was unusual: the California Democrat isn't a member of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs with jurisdiction over FDIC; and the agency is supposed to operate from money it raises from bank-paid insurance payments - not direct federal dollars.

Documents reviewed by The Washington Times show Mrs. Feinstein first offered Oct. 30 to help the FDIC secure money for its effort to stem the rise of home foreclosures. Her letter was sent just days before the agency determined that CB Richard Ellis Group (CBRE) - the commercial real estate firm that her husband Richard Blum heads as board chairman - had won the competitive bidding for a contract to sell foreclosed properties that FDIC had inherited from failed banks.

About the same time of the contract award, Mr. Blum's private investment firm reported to the Securities and Exchange Commission that it and related affiliates had purchased more than 10 million new shares in CBRE. The shares were purchased for the going price of $3.77; CBRE's stock closed Monday at $5.14.

Spokesmen for the FDIC, Mrs. Feinstein and Mr. Blum's firm told The Times that there was no connection between the legislation and the contract signed Nov. 13, and that the couple didn't even know about CBRE's business with FDIC until after it was awarded.

Senate ethics rules state that members must avoid conflicts of interest as well as "even the appearance of a conflict of interest." Some ethics analysts question whether Mrs. Feinstein ran afoul of the latter provision, creating the appearance that she was rewarding the agency that had just hired her husband's firm.

"This clearly gives the appearance of a conflict of interest," said Kent Cooper, a former federal regulator who specializes in government ethics and disclosures. "To maintain the people's trust in government, it is incumbent on a legislator to take the extra steps necessary to ensure that when she introduces any legislation that it does not cause people to question her motives or the business activities of her spouse."

Mrs. Feinstein and Mr. Blum, a wealthy investment banker, are a power couple in both Washington and California who sat behind President Obama during his inauguration in January. Mrs. Feinstein also is mentioned as a candidate for California governor.

Sadly it won't matter. I really hope "The (other) Right People" go after her but there is zero chance that any agency is going after her in the current environment.

As wrong as it is, she's untouchable. No one will go after her. All we can hope for is "natural causes".

The end? This is just the beginning! Remember, corrupt politicians almost always get rewarded with more bribes, practical immunity and/or promotion.

This is good. Want to know why? It can be used against her if she decides to run for Governor. Newsom is way too far left, Villariagosa is more trouble, but if we can get Jerry in there, we'd have a more favorable outcome for us.

This is one of the reasons why someone would pay $5,000,000 for a seat in the U.S. Senate! Most of our Senators, and even quite a few Congressmen have become "board members" of large corporations after they've been elected to "represent" us!

Feinstein has done this before. The weekly METRO newspaper chain wrote a five page article about Department of Defense contracts being forwarded to companies owned by her filthy rich husband a couple of years ago. Remember that this left wing paper does not like Bush's wars or the Pentagon. Nailing D-Fi in this scandal was just collateral damage in their minds.

Unfortunately the Democrats are no more ethical, than those crooked Republicans who were thrown out of Congress in 2006; because they sold their souls to a corrupt lobbyist named Jack Abramoff.

*******************
Illegal aliens are not allowed to have firearms. They cannot purchase guns with a Mexican driver's license. Gavin Newsom will not call ICE, no matter how times the San Francisco Police arrest a gang banger foreigner for violating a provision in the Gun Control Act of 1968! Newsom has also harbored federal fugitives who committed gun crimes! So a widow has filed a lawsuit against San Francisco's mayor; because his policies killed her husband two small boys.

The same goes for Antomio Villiargosa in Los Angeles. Jamiel Shaw is dead; because a liberal judge did not call ICE either. He turned an illegal alien loose on probation for having an illegal gun. The gang banger bought another one and killed a high school football player.

Corrupt anti-gun politicians are killing innocent people with their insane political correctness. I am not crazy enough to vote the anti-gun mayors of our gang infested crime ridden sanctuary cities. These fools won't enforce the existing laws as it is. An they are supported by the Brady Bunch too. What big joke...

As Nanci Pelosi said, this is the most ethical congress ever. Yea right.

Remember "culture of corruption". I don't hear her spouting that garbage now because her team is in power. She was sure quick to nail the Republicans when they did something wrong, but is silent when numerous members of her party are under ethics investigations.

We need to use anything we can find against her.

She is trying to secure her legacy because she's really too old to be govenor.

She would love a new AWB that doesn't sunset but she knows that it would be a bad idea now party wise and she won't let the other socialists down.

As soon as she looses her position in congress she is going to have no real influence in the government, she will be done and gone.

First we got Chris Dodd and his wife's involvement with AIG, then his putting the bonus clause in the TARP money then trying to hang AIG people out to dry.

Then we have Barney Frank and his gay lover screwing the housing market with Fannie and Freddie, then paying millions in bonus to these execs, yet strangely, none of them were threatened like Chris Dodd and Barney Frank did to the AIG folks.

Then we have Feinstein banking millions with the stock purchase deal via her husband.

This is third world corruption Democrat style.

Hope and change indeed.

Stupidity and ignorance is AN ACT politicians put on to help immunize themselves and create a defense to their numerous crimes. They know exactly what they're doing. In fact, there should be a new category of acting award for them, awarded posthumously:

Lifetime Achievement Award For Stupidity Act by a Politician Barely or Never Punished For His/Her Crimes.

Maybe you didn't know that D-Fi steered some Pentagon DoD contrcts to companies owned by her husband before. The radical METRO newspaper chain wrote a feature article on her sleazy games about 2 years ago. This left wing weekly is anti-war. They don't like the military or defense contractors either. Feinstein was caught in a liberal investigative reporter's sights...

It's not the first time.

She inserted funds into a national defense bill to fix up the Presidio (a closed base). She has family on the Presidio Trust board.

Apparently her husband has investments in the national defense sector, yet she is/was on the armed forces committee...

DiFi is about as crooked as it gets in Washington and has been for years, yet nothing comes of it.

Currupt yes, Stupid No, she knows were the skeletons are and she gets to skate on that thin ice everytime.

His China investments have become a target because Feinstein long has been active in promoting U.S.-China relations and recently supported the congressional vote to grant China permanent normal trade relations.

Why do San Francisco's mayors need a frigging CCW permit? Armed police sit in their cars in front of the house. Packing heat feels so good even if they're hypocrites about guns...

I vote corrupt and stupid. Feinstein, back when she was Mayor of SF went public with sensitive info and evidence about the nightstalker after the LA County Detectives working the case specifically made it clear that the info was to remain private and only for investigative purposes. They believed releasing the info could have hurt their case and made it more difficult to catch him. So what does the ditz do? She holds a press conference describing in detail the evidence to everyone. The detectives working the case were pissed to say the least.

Let's not forget her other past conflicts of interest.

Remember when our Navy's P-3 Orion "ran into" a Chinese fighter. She was the only person to publicly apologize to the Chinese government. She said it was the right thing to do. P-3 is a huge plane compare to a fighter. It's like a semi-truck. They aren't exactly nimble which makes it hard for them to run into fighter. She said this has nothing to do with all the business her husband conducts in China.

Or how about the whole energy crisis a few years back with the rolling blackouts. She was outraged with the energy companies. Well someone looked into her financial records. Oh guess what, she own stocks in those companies. She claimed she didn't know what her financial advisor does. Sure she didn't.

Where's the news?? DiFi and her husband have been playing this "I don't know anything about his business." both ends against the middle since they have been together - at least since she was SF Mayor. It seems if the JD gets overzealous with a Rep. lawmaker, he looses his seat. Those that vote for the Dems seem to be ok with this sort of thing, they just keep voting the b*****ds in.

Better be careful, things are whacked enough in this goofy state for her to get elected governor. Maybe we should impeach Arnie so we can have one of those special elections with hookers, pimps, porn stars, OTH childhood actors and a complete traveling side show cast running for governor. Hell, we seem to like actors for gov. here, lets get Robert Downey Jr., better yet, Wee Man from Jackass.

The reality is that there is no reality in CA politics, and just because she looks like she died years ago, DiFi is definitely not dead in CA.
