My wife was at a cheerleading conference today with a co-worker so off I went to the Carrizo Plain to do some more Geocaching. My goal is to turn the Carrizo Plain into a Geocaching Mecca!

Anyway, anytime I go Geocaching out there I have to take some sort of rifle with me. Last week I took the M1 Garand, but this week I had to take the AR57 out so i could test it and get it sighted in.

It is good to have a large capacity magazine permit. Yes that is 50 rounds!

Before I headed out this morning I decided to cut off the feed lips on an old 30 round magazine I had in the garage and test it out as a shell catcher since I have the upper on a featureless lower (the AR57 upper is always a detachable magazine no matter what the lower is, that is unless you mod the actual upper mag release).

I pulled up to dead end road that I was trying to find a cache on and set up my targets. My second round was a malfunction and I had a couple more while using the fake magazine/brass collector.

I eventually got the gun sighted in and didn't have anymore malfunctions. It was time to see if 50 empty cases could fit in the 30 round magazine or not.

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g52/elrojo14/Geocaching/th_AR57.jpg (http://s53.photobucket.com/albums/g52/elrojo14/Geocaching/?action=view&current=AR57.flv)

As you can see, it worked pretty well and there were no malfunctions.

I think I like this!

Technically the civilian PS90 wasn't made until after the high-cap ban (2004?)

but the p90 has been made since the mid-90's....so couldn't one theortically be in possession of pre-ban p90 mag 50 rounders?

The PWA AR57 on a POF lower with MMG, YHM muzzle brake, CMMG two stage trigger, and Trijicon Reflex 12.9 MOA triangle sight.
.

About that YHM muzzle brake-

I recently acquired an AR-57 upper and some CA-Legal 10-rd mags. I got this upper primarily for fun, as I already have CA-Legal ARs in the more common calibers. I was going to build it featureless, as it seems that solutions for a fixed-mag are essentially nonexistent with this kind of upper...

Then I realized, upon receiving my new upper, that there is a flash hider affixed to the end. Looks removable (although I haven't tried) and I would imagine it is since it's the same brand of upper that you have.

So the root of the question is this- I don't know a darn thing about muzzle brakes, but do I have to find a special 5.7x28 caliber muzzle brake for this thing or can i use a standard .223 muzzle brake? I don't know if there is enough tolerance as 5.7x28mm is approx .224 cal. Did you have to find a special 5.7x28 YHM muzzle brake or are you using one for a different caliber?

Thanks in advance if you can help!

The shells are ejected through the magwell...so unless you wanted to split the upper and lower from each other after every couple mags it seems more practical to leave it open

I like the idea of the standard mag body as a shell catcher....

Randall from AR15barrels.com told me the 5.7 is actually a .224 round, so the standard 5.56mm/.223 muzzle accessories should work. So I just used a YHM .223 comp.

I didn't like the weight of the fake can on this one as I initially tried it and then decided on the comp.

OK great. I've got a RRA tactical muzzle break that should do the trick. I figured it wouldn't be an issue, I seriously doubted that the brakes were so precisely manufactured that didn't have a little space left over for the extra .001 ...thanks!

NOT A LAWYER.
If you acquired it legally(pre2000), sure. And it is no ones business when you may have got the magazines, so, shoot away and be safe. You also have to change out the muzzle device, it comes with a flash sup.
I say, don't take the standard capacity mags to the range/other crowded public spaces because peoples ignorance can cause problems, and it is easier to avoid problems all together than to have to explain your way out of it to RO/cop/nosy lane neighbor.

I love the "if acquired legally" phrase regarding use.
So what if I acquired P90 mags illegally? Where do you use those?
What is the PC on using illegally acquired mags?

and why was this thread bumped?

and why was this thread bumped?

I'd guess the bumper did a CG search of 'AR57' and this popped up. Couldn't be an accidental bump since they make you click that "This thread is super old" box prior to posting.

I have no idea what an AR57 rifle is but based on the numerous featureless rifles I have had I'd say the OP's rifle is 100% legal and so is the use of "legally acquired magazines". I have a few AR's with A2/MMG combos and it is quite handy once you get used to it.

I'm not trying to poo noyour rifle, I actually think those are pretty neat little rigs. IMHO, with the price of .223 vs 5.7 and the availability of surefire 60 rounders for AR's it seems like a moot deal nowadays.

The thread was bumped from 5 years ago with a post by Antiscreed reading "I just bought an ar57. With your grip as shown can I use the 50 rd magazine?"

The answer is yes. There is no PC surrounding the use of 50 round detachable magazines in California.

It's illegal to purchase, sell, import, or manufacture 50 round magazines though. So you draw your own conclusions.

MrPlink
11-05-2013, 11:05 AM
Well what I am getting at is there is no way to use a mag illegally. Even in the case of using 11plus rd mags in a a mag locked rifle the issue becomes the rifle, not the magazine.

If you walked up to a LEO and said, "I purchased this 30 round ar15 magazine as is(completely assembled) from some dude on the street". What would happen?

Or something to that effect, where no rifle is involved? Or you go and tell the sheriff, "I have been putting together rebuild kits". Serious question too, please answer if you can. I have no idea, I am not an expert or lawyer.

I ordered a second one when Omnitravis bought his. I have not shot this one yet so if anyone wants it PM me for a very sweet price. After ordering the full auto bolt I decided to order the SBR version of this upper to mount on my MG. I'm really itching to shoot this though so if I put some rounds through it this weekend I will discount it even further.

The mag catch is not too finicky. It just takes getting used to. AR57 states not to pound the mag into place and the catch is does not move back to give 100% clearance so a little pressure is required to get the mag in place. When I get my upper I will just slap the mags in place as the only possible damage would be to the mag and not the upper, which is stated in the manual.

Thanks for the advice on the mags, Phil.
Make sure to record this thing set up on the MG.

I have had mine for a while now and it is a blast to shoot (When I say I, I mean my wife and sometimes she even lets me shoot it).

Hey. My latch release is way shorter than yours as well as the bolt lever. Did you upgrade those or is that just standard for the newer model?

I'm thinking that's the reason. Mine is gen 1. Gen 2 has a fluted barrel too

Is that charging handle gen 1 or an aftermarket? Mine folds in kind of like H&K style, grab it and pull it out/back at the same time.
That one has seen some use, nice!

What kind of lower is that?

I guess it would be a gen 1. I have had it for quite a while. I used to shoot it a bunch too, but it has been a while. I don't even remember what kind of lower that it, sun devil? maybe? That was my first 80%er. Darn thing is a laser beam though.
