View Full Version : Does Anybody NOT own an AR?

bowfin

I am not sure if I am an anomaly in today's world, but I own dozens of firearms and not an AR amongst them. No particular reason, just never caught up with one, or something else caught up with me. Three brothers, all own guns well into the double digits total, and no ARs there, either.

I don't know if the AR owners in California are that prevalent, or they just post more, but it seems that at least 80% of those that own a centerfire rifle in California own an AR.

So, just wanted to see what kind of ratio we might have, and I am NOT interested in another AR pros and cons thread, just trying to figure how far out of the mainstream we are.

in CA in reguards to OLL, well the whole OLL movement started with an AR...so thats food for though. easy to obtain , easy to build.

You know, I own one ( which is my second one) an honestly I really don't even want it anymore. I enjoy shooting my Wasr10 so much more, even though so many people talk trash about them. The cost of ammo is just about the same price, but depending on where you go x39 tends to be a little harder to find. But I may soon be one of the only gun owners in CA to not own a AR.

Handguns only here...(for now.)

Well, being that the AR is like the small block Chevy of black rifles plus the fact that they are modular & accurate, the combo makes for a very attractive rifle. Also being able to build one over time makes them more affordable. My first black OLL rifle was my PTR-91, which is still my favorite. I own several AR's in all configurations & enjoy them all.

04-18-2009, 8:37 PM
I PM'd Bill Wiese last month on the numbers of OLL AR's in the state. He said that in 2006, when the first ones were coming in, the estimate was 30,000. Now in 2009, he estimates 125,000 to upwards of 200,000 in state.

Seems like those that do are catching up to if not passing those that don't!

I do have one. Its fun to shoot and tinker with. Honestly though, my friends find it "cooler" than I do. With the price of ammo and components I am considering making it into a precision type gun instead of a "go through 2-300 rounds in an hour with your buddies" gun.

I don't..... At the beginning of OLL craze I have bought five lowers.... but then I didn't have high caps for them ( as oppose to other rifles that I do have ), so I have sold all lowers.....
Decided to stick with 7.62 caliber rifles :-)

I have lowers that I bought "just so I'd have them". But, they are not build, and I don't know if/when I'll build them. So, technically, I don't really own an AR. Have a great time shooting our Mini-14s, and we don't get mobbed as they look plain enough.

Not. We actually tried getting one for my Dad for Father's Day, but it was ... defective? Weird. Ended up getting our money back after a bunch of times sending it back and forth. They couldn't fix it.

At that point none of us were at all interested in building one, which is why we went with an assembled one, but I think I would be down to put one together for myself now. Until then, I'm happy with .308 Win.

If the OP is from Nebraska then the black rifle may not be a big deal. But here is CA when we are told that you can't and or shouldn't have something then obviously it becomes more desirable. Then the fever snowballs from there.

Yes, but they're too easy to shoot. My buddy loves mine and will gladly shoot up all of my ammo for me:rolleyes:, ***** needs to buy ammo instead of dope.

I don't have one. I was interested there for a bit, knowing I could buy a lower and build my own. But then I joined CalGuns and realized just how "trendy" the AR is, and was kinda turned off. I bought a Mini instead and have since acquired a SU-16 as well, and to be honest, unless a too-good-to-pass-up deal smacks me in the face, I think I'm good on semi-auto rifles for awhile. I'm gonna re-focus now on more handguns--- another .40 and another .357 are next in the line-up.

04-19-2009, 9:37 AM
I owned them in the past and they are good rifles but I
have switched to the FAL for a long range battle rifle in 762 NATO
and now that I was able to get a Galil clone (Golani)
I prefer it over the AR in 556MM,being it is built on the
ROBUST AK system yet has much better accuracy then
standard AK types, flip up nite sights, and a great folding stock---plus it looks cooler IMHO,
(if you have to fight the Al Queda types may as well have a weapon designed by
the Israelis)----- Pete

ar15robert
04-19-2009, 9:52 AM
Bought one ten years ago.I like it and it is very accurate but been playing with the 300 win mag and 30-30 lately.Took the AR with me yesterday only put 13 rounds thru it and about 20 thru the 300 mag.

I like long range shooting too so i really dont throw lead downrange rapidly either but i can use the ar as an all around rifle too.

Prefer the mini 14 and 30-30 for close range plinking they are fun to shoot.

Don't have any yet..maybe later... later in the future. Theres way better stuff in front of that system.
I did extensive research on that system as I do every system that interests me, and well its a baby(don't get me wrong I know its a superior rifle)but you really need to baby that sucker 24/7...
I understand every system needs to be oiled, lubed, cleaned and maintained..all that and some..no doubts..but when SHTF..
I believe AKs and other systems are superior..

Not yet, but currently building. I like the fat there are so many parts and configurations, and that you can put it together and tear it down / part it out easily yourself. Like everything I own, I just can't bare to leave it stock, so it seemed like the perfect Ca compliant rifle to pickup for me. Thought about an AK but they just seem so cheap. Maybe someday I'll get a Russian one but AR's will be first.

Don't feel bad, AR's aren't to everyone's taste, and I know several gunowners that don't own one.

Having said that, I believe that would be in everyone's best interest that there are as many AR's in cirulation as possible (Heller, weapons in common usage can't be banned)

I agree. Since I'm really not Rambo, nor have I played him on TV, I'm not that attracted to the Evil Black Rifle. My 2 rifles are a 10-22 and Mini-14, both wooden stocks. Before the 2000 ban, I had a Bushmaster XM15E2S, along with my SLR-95. Needed money, decided to sell the Bushie and keep the SLR. Nowadays I just can't seem to want a "neutered" rifle. Figure if I can only have a traditionally stocked rifle with detachable mag, it'd be an M1A. Sure...you can do great things with an MMG, maglock, or a U-15, but it's just not in the spirit of the rifle. Too bad, too. I absolutely love AR15s.

Been kicking myself for selling ever since. One of my biggest gun-related regrets. :(

I've got three of my own and another 3 for my unborn kids. If it weren't a symbol of freedom in America and up for being banned, I wouldn't own any, probably.

I don't understand the whole "rifle" thing, nor will I ever. People say they shoot with iron sights out to 100 yards and beyond. There's no way anyone could see where they were hitting unless they were shooting and using a spotting scope after every shot or using Shoot-n-see targets all the time. Even at 30 yards, I can hardly see a .22LR or .223 hole until I've shot at least a bunch of rounds. I feel like I'm just wasting ammo whenever I take it out to those distances, unscoped.

Since my range stopped letting the members shoot steel plates with pistol cal carbines, I find that I really have no interest in shooting any of my ARs anymore.

I do not own any AR type rifles. They just don't have that large of an appeal to me. I will eventually get one, but I'm quite happy with my Garand. 3 complete AR's ( 1 for me and 1ea for my 2 sons)
1 stripped lower ( don't know why I bought an extra)
1 M1 Garand ( my baby)
1 Mini-14 ( actually fun to shoot )
1 Winchester Trapper 45colt (more fun)
2 pistols 9mm & 380 ( not a real autoloader fan)
1 revolver 45colt ( total blast, wish it was a 12 shooter)

Now that I've been on disability for 8 months or so, lost my job and have started to eat the cat's food, the list may need to downsize a bit.

I wanted it for target so the only thing I'm bummed about loosing is the option for the 5.56 but I can make due with only using .223. The AR is a great gun though and a lot of fun.

I guess we all have different tastes in guns like we do in women. As far as an AR or black rifle in general, they are fun for target practice & its fun accessorizing them. Bolt guns have thier place & long range shooting is fun. But, I wouldn't feel comfortable if I didn't own a rifle (or 20) that could throw down A LOT of lead in a hurry in case s**t happens. No matter who you are or how good you can shoot, your bolt gun can't put out as many as a semi auto like the AR, M1, HK, FAL, etc...

I was happy with my glock and gsg until i joined Calguns. Then I realized that I didn't own enough guns. So then I went to my first gun show and bought an AR. And then bought 15 more guns.

I still have you bet

I own an AR, I want going to but then the parts all kinda found me, lol, I did it because It was a cheap build :43:

No AR here, never really been a huge fan. I pick up my Saiga 7.62X39 on Monday, more my style. My next pick is an M1A, something about them just appeals to me more than an AR.

Good choice:thumbsup:

too much money for something that jams way too often

Whaaa? It apparently jammed so much that we lost every single engagement in Vietnam, failed to capture Noriega in Grenada, didn't kill any Somali fighters in Somalia, don't own the nation of Afghanistan, and as the Minister of Information in Iraq says, we haven't even captured Saddam International Airport. Ohh wait!?!?

Might want to look up Khe Sang, Ia Drang, Tet, Panama, the wars with Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia (18 US casulaties vs 500 Somali casualties) or even Israeli military engangements. Even the Israelis moved away from the large supply of AKs and Galils in exchange for ARs. The Israelis don't use weapons that "jam too much", they live in a very harsh environment and unlike their enemies cannot replace a lost life was some random conscript.

I bet California is on par with the rest of the Country in terms of AR ownership per capita. Most other states don't have forums like this because their 2nd amendments rights are not infringed as much as California. This forum brings us together and there are tons of us in this big state. It must give the impression that California is loaded with ARsters.

The appeal AR platform is it's endless upgrades and versatility. You could have an entry gun or a sniper rifle within minutes. You could use 5.56 swap out your upper from .22 to .50 Beowulf if you are so inclined. It can be built to suit the user from large to small.

There are several other guns that offer a multitude after-market products such as the 1911 and Ruger 10/22, but that another thread.

I one of every gun listed in this thread and will most likely buy some other platform in the future like the totally customizable Remington 700.

As of yesterday.....I do! I still need to save for a BCG and CH though. So technically I have an incomplete AR.

I had to leave my pre ban CAR-15 and BM-59 back home in Hawaii when I moved to the PRK :(

No AR for me -- too expensive! Why would I want to get a small-caliber plastic-and-aluminum rifle for $1000 when I could get a large-caliber wood-and-steel rifle from the CMP for $500? ;)

I don't own one, don't plan to, nor do I care if I am an anomaly.

Not anymore. I prefer my large caliber wood and steel rifles.

Once I move to UT, then I'll get an AR, AK, .50BMG, etc.

Just my .02, but by banning them cali law makers only made us want our ARs more. Probably already said, since there's 11 pages I only skimmed.

My first and only gun is an AR, I'm planning to pick up a 1911 in the future though. I just want it for fun, it looks badass, and it is badass. Good for hobby shooting and when the SHTF

No AR for me, at least yet. I wanted to build a 6.5 Grendel, but when I realized that the rifle alone would cost $1500 and the reloading equipment would be another $1000, I sold my OLL. I bought a $400 Saiga x39 instead :43:

I don't have an AR. I haven't gotten around to building one, despite having 4 lowers. Frankly, I don't like ARs or the 5.56 round, M16 is/was a lousy infantry rifle, and it's semiauto version doesn't even have the somewhat redeeming quality of having the fun switch; the only reason I'm planning to build one or two of them is because the great state of CA doesn't like it.

Of course, I mean AR-15s.

I don't own an AR, but I would like to build a couple when/if the current AR craze calms down and parts become a little cheaper and easier to find. I'd like to get a 16" carbine build and a 24" precision build. A friend of mine is building an AR-15 (just needs an upper), so I'll be able to get my AR fix from him once it's done.

I currently plan on getting a Remington 700 SPS Varmint in .308 sometime in late June or early July, but it will probably take the rest of the year until I have it configured exactly the way I want it with a different stock, bipod, and a good scope (I'm going to put a fairly cheap scope on there to begin with to get by until I can afford something better). I also want to get a few C&R guns, most notably a Mosin Nagant and a CZ-52. So basically my gun purchases for the rest of the year have already been decided. I don't expect to even start an AR-15 until next year at the earliest.

At one point had seven AR's,sold three, and now have four plus the one for work. I find it especially easy to use in tight quarters; the only complaint I have is that it is pain to clean. My LWRC has corrected that, and what once used to take me 45 minutes to clean takes me 10 minutes at the most.

That being said, I am building a the last stripped lower I have into a SPR with Noveske 18" barrel. We will se how accurate the barrel is. I find the AR and FAL the easiest to build, with the AK a little bit of a pain. With good ammo and training, you can literally take care of any business with the 5.56mm/.223 round.

Thats because you're doing it wrong:p

You dont need to white glove detail it, you just wipe it down with a rag and relube. Its takes a whopping 7 mins to do that.

Who needs an AR? It's all about the AKs man...
