I have a hankering for a .30-06 rifle, but need suggestions.
I was looking at the Ruger Hawkeye International,
http://ruger.com/Firearms/FAProdView?model=17144&return=Y
but its a bit pricey at $939. (I prefer bolt-action of course.) Please help.

If you're willing to go synthetic check out the Marlin XL7 for ~$320. Shoots better groups than my Rem 700 in .308 which was ~$650. Though aftermarket replacement parts are somewhat non-existent at the moment. It's a light rifle (not heavy barreled) but the factory recoil pad reduces felt recoil quite a bit.

i was lucky to find a winchester model 70 out the door for 5.50 with a box of 20 rd ammo ive only shot it once it has a good kick but y belive it can bring down a deer with no problem yes almost any place sells synthetiscs like savage at big 5 for about 4.99 but you may want to search for a similar name brand like winchester ruger or remingtion that way at least you have a 30-06 and a name brand witch holds its value in case you deside to sell it but its all about choises and what you can find so all i can say is that the 30-06 is good caliber ..

I've like the two Savage rifles I've shot before. I don't remember what models they were, but they struck me as very well-built rifles.

Of if you are into C&R, there's always a Garand, 1903, or FN-49 (Luxembourg).

I've had a fair amount of 30-06 rifles and bolt guns in general but I always come back to my Remington 700. Everything else aside I like the action the best (maybe cause I grew up with it).

The only thing I recommend against is the Remmy 710. My wife wanted one, said it was "cute". So who am I to say no to a new gun? The action sucks. In a hunting situation I don't think I could make a follow up shot if my life depended on it, even after a good break in period.

I have a Browning A-Bolt II w/ a BOSS system in 30-06. Great gun, and the BOSS (Ballistic Optimizing Shooting System) allows you to fine tune your accuracy using factory boxed ammo.

I do not own a Browning A-bolt. My brother does and he likes it better than any of his other rifles. I value his opinion on bolt rifles more than mine.

Practically every rifle made has been chambered in 30/06. Go look/handle all you can and decide on which one you like the best. It WILL be available in 30/06.

Been shooting my A-bolt .30-06 for 14 years and love it, never wanted anything else.

Get the Marlin. You avoid the "hey look I've got a name brand gun ::::giggle giggle:::" price and get a helluva shooting 30-06. Once people see the light on how accurate this rifles are, the prices will skyrocket.

Which model Marlin do you suggest? I grew up with a 30.06 and have been in the market for one.

Go for a Mauser 3000 in 30-06. They have the smoothest action I have ever felt in my life. I am not being Bias just because I own 1 either.:o

You can get 1 for about $500 if you really look around.

I like Rugers. I've got a tang safety .308 which is my main deer gun...

If you're willing to consider a C&R gun, there's nothing wrong with an old 03-A3 or 1917 Enfield...

I saw the Hawkeye on sale at Cabelas last weekend (Reno) for $599.00 - I would think $700.00 is more the CA real world price. I was very surprised at the wood, very good fit and the stock overall felt very good. I'm not a fan of the matte finish, but other than that I liked it alot.
