Can't say anything bad about either really. Both will work as an entry level tactical rifle but I'm hoping to do some long range with this (up to 1000yds). The P has a 26" barrel which i like, but the 5R is just plain ol' BLING.... Which would you get?

Id get the 5r. I use 5r barrels for my precision rigs and it makes a big difference in fouling. When you shoot overbore cartridges pushing a big bullet super fast down a small hole the 5r is easier on the jacket helping prevent jacket separation. I have never been able to rip the jackets off of bullets with a 5r barrel but have experienced jacket separation quite a few times with conventionally rifled barrels. Also, from what i have noticed, i get about 100fps more velocity before reaching overpressure with a 5r barrel vs. conventional rifling. FWIW

thanks. i didn't think of fouling or jacket separation... I do like the fact that they both come with HS stocks- although i hear the 5R has a slightly different contour.

does anyone know of any custom rigs in that price range with similiar or better performance?

Remingtons 5R barrel is not a custom aftermarket barrel like he is referring to. You will need see a 100fps gain in velocity....... Buy whatever rifle you get a better deal on. 1k for eather is a streatch. You can buy a SPS-V for 585.00 shipped, buy a nice stock and go to work on it with S&B, NF, or premier scope.

i just bought a 700P from another member. Great deal $900 for the rifle, scope & Rings and Harris bipod.

It is fully capable o freaching out to 1,000 yards

For about a grand, the 5R cannot be beat. No problem with the 700P, but the 5r is a better barrel. Other options are to get a SPS tactical, add a HS precision stock when funds allow, and eventually replace the barrel with a Rock 5r, Bartlien 5R, Schneider 5C, etc.

You cant go wrong with either, but I would get the 5R for 2 reasons. They shoot better out of the box, and I think 26" barrel is overkill.

i have both, and i like them both..... 5R and 700P, 700P has the length advantage, the 5R has the rifling advantage. the 5R *is* tight tho.... i had never seen a factory gun that has such a tight chamber.... the chamber is tighter than any other Rem700 i had seen

and... there is NO custom rig in that price range.... duh!

PS. if you decided to get a 5R, PM me, I have one for sale.

26" is overkill if you're shooting .308 to 1000 yards. I'd go 18" - 20"

Get the 5R if you can swing the dough.

Forget about going custom at this stage - spend money on quality optics, a quality mount, a angle cosign indicator, a good rangefinder, and invest in top quality reloading dies and components.

I have had both - the 5R is the better shooter by far, better fit and finish too. I like the weight and balance of the 2" shorter rifle in the barrel and fore-grip. The 5R barrel broke in faster, stays cleaner longer and then is easier to clean.

I would challenge you "ballistically" how to get to 1000yds with a 18" barrel....

Get a 700P if you can find one right now. They are "Johnny on the spot" in accuracy. I have had two, and think they are great for what you get and in terms of performance with the HS stock with the aluminum bedding block.

Ohhh Great guys...... This talk again about longer barrels give you a bigger dick. I bet anyone of you can take frank on, Randall and Jicko you two mainly. He will shoot his 18" barrel and you guys can shoot your 26" barrels. Not only does he rifle make more velocitiy then yours, im shure its more handier too.

Some info-

385 yards, used 2.1 Mils of elevation - Cor Bon 175gr VLD
430 yards used 2.4 mils of elevation - Cor Bon 175gr VLD
500 yards used 2.8 mils of elevation - 170gr HPS
625 yards used 4.6 mils of elevation - Cor Bon 175gr VLD
667 yards used 4.6 mils of elevation - 170gr HPS
708 yards used 5.3 mils of elevation - 170gr HPS
812 yards used 6.5 mils of elevation - 170gr HPS
910 yards used 8 mils of elevation - 170gr HPS
915 yards used 8.1 mils of elevation - 170gr HPS

Velocitys-
Black Hills 175gr Average Velocity = 2649.1 for one box, and 2663fps for another...

Cor Bon 175gr VLDs = Average 2622fps for one box, 2605fps for another...

Lapua 170gr HPS = 2858fps for one box ,2850fps for another...

Yes that is from the Gladius 18" barrel............ Nice rethink 308 and ANY barrel over 22" is a waist of time.... Unless you shoot F-Class.

How do you get 2649fps from a 18"/20" *factory* barrel!? We are talking not talking about some exotic custom build..... so along the line of 700P and 5R.... a 18/20" option would be the 700P LTR 20"..... now tell me HOW you get 175SMK to go at 2650fps?

BHA 175SMK is @ 2640fps out of 26" 700PSS, and 2600fps out of 24" 700SS5R..... I don't have data on 20" 700P-LTR, but I would expect it to be down below 2500fps....

PS. where do u buy this "Gladius" barrel???

Uh - my Chandler had a 20" 1:12 Hart barrel that loved the 1K line at 29 Palms with 175s pushed hard.

now what about if we threw a 700 LTR into mix?

I was kinda sold on the LTR, but looks like maybe the 5r might fit somewhere in the middle?

or maybe a Model 700 XCR Compact Tactical

Get the 700P - file 13 the remmy barrel and put a real 5R (Rock comes to mind) on it. Just remember the Rem 5R still has a crappy factory barrel, just with 5R rifling.

You may as well build it from bottom up.... since if u are to put a new barrel on, u would want to "true" the action... and put a new trigger... then all in all... would be just like paying the custom price tag...

Apples/Oranges.
They are talking about tight bore custom built $3000+ guns.

We all know that tight custom barrels run faster than factory barrels.

I'd hazard a guess that was not a factory remington barrel shooting factory ammo.

I've shot a factory Remington 700 PSS that was cut down to 18" and recrowned (no other work) shooting 175gr Black Hills .308 and had no problems hitting 1000 yard steel targets all day long - right about 1 MOA (~10" group)

MV? Numbers please.....

2500fps would be the min. MV that 175SMK would need to have for it to stay supersonic @ 1k yds. And the transition is right at about 1k yds.

You *may* be luck just that day, just that condition... but if the temperature is a little colder, or u are higher or lower in altitude, or the pressure is higher or lower.... you may not be able to... nothing about your shooting ability, just simple physics/ballistics....

So, now, do you want to build a gun like that without any margin?

Randall, if you're talking elevation, I first shot it in Phoenix, but I did take the same rifle to Moyock, NC where it's about sea level. When I was in Phoenix, it was spring time and when I was in NC it was Fall. I'd have to check my data books for specific conditions.

I decided against putting the LTR in the list of options mainly because of the 20" barrel. It is definitely light-weight as listed, but I'm not too concerned with portability. i want velocity!
