View Full Version : How to build a .243 AR?
04-15-2009, 8:44 PM
I am new to the whole AR/OLL world and I am sorta kinda hooked.
I was curious how and what is needed to to build a AR in a .243? I have seen the DPMS is making them but I would like to build one. So, what lower do I need, BCG, what magazines work, any suggestions for uppers, any other advice?
Thanks, sorry for the noob questions.

Standard upper, standard lower, standard BCG....assuming the .243 is dimensionally similar to 223/556 in critical areas.
Likely new barrel with modified chamber, but the people who know (AR15barrels, for example), will chime in and let you know.

I have not seen a 243 ar, but i am not sure if it would take a 308 lower or not. i want to say that the 243 would be to long to go in a 556 receiver.
I have heard the .243 will in fact fit but not seen itself yet...

A .243 is a .308 necked down, so I would start with a .308 lower. Should be easy from there.

The DPMS .243 is built on an AR10 (.308) lower platform. If you want higher caliber in an AR15 look into 6.8SPC, if you want flatter shooting in an AR15 look into .204 Ruger. Or, if you have lots of monies... get a .308 AR10 lower and custom build yourself a .243WIN AR. DPMS sells the barrels, bolts, and magazines on their website.

DDs Ranch had a 243 Remington R25 available on their website. Not sure if its still available.
