What do you guys use for handguns rounds (9mm, 45 acp, 38spl, 357 magnum & 44 magnum) & rifle (223 & 308)

I see that there are small, large, small magnum & large magnum primers for both pistol & rifle. Can someone explain the uses, etc?

And then there are more different types of small rifle primers.... I'm loosing my mind.

Oh, what is a good book for reading up about reloading for a noob?

WokMaster1 - I load for handgun only. The small and large designation refers to the primer size, small = 9mm, .38 Spec./357 Mag. etc. Large = .41 Mag.,.45ACP,.45 Colt, .44 Spec./Mag. etc. Simply match the primer with the round / load we'll be using. I believe Magnum primers burn a little hotter then standard primers and should be reserved for Magnum loads. However, I ran out of standard Large Pistol Primers and used Magnum Large Pistol primers in my .45ACP with no negative effect. Most of the major manufacturers offer books on reloading Speer, Lyman

For 9mm and 38spcl i use winchester small pistol primers.

for 357 magnum I use winchester small magnum pistol primers

for 45 acp and 44 magnum I use winchester large pistol primer for standard or magnum loads.

for 223 I use small standard rifle primers, donesnt matter brand.

for 308 I use either standard large rifle primer or magnum large rifle.

When it comes to primers I usually stick to what my manual says when it comes to type, not necessarily the brand.

such as if it's a magnum round I use magnum primers, and the same with standard. I don't use magnum primers on a non magnum round such as 45 acp and 9mm, and vice versa.

When it comes to my rifle round such as 30-06, 270 win, 308 I use magnum primers and also standard.

with the 223 I have heard of people using magnum rounds but most people reccomend against it.

And then there are more different types of small rifle primers.... I'm loosing my mind.

there are really only two types of small rifle primers, standard and magnum.

I can't really recommend a good book for brand new reloaders, i think there is a book called the abc's of realoading but I may be wrong.

I use the web sites powder load data and my speer manual number 13.

If ever in doubt start a thread here with questions. I have been reloading for 7 years and I still learn new stuff all the time.

Hope this helps
