I'm ready 2 buy a .308 lower. I don't know weather to go armalite or dpms pattern. I think the deciding factor for me will be mags. I have a good sized stash of m14 mags I purchased in the 90's. I've heard that they can be modified to work with an Armalite lower. Is this true? What needs to be done? Will the mod'ed mags still work in my M1 A? Thanx.

AFAIK you can mod the M14 mags but there was some reliability issues with doing so. I am in the same boat as you and have decided to go with the DPMS pattern because of the mag issue. Plus magpul is making some pol mags for the DPMS/KAC pattern rifles not armalite. Also heard that Noveske might switch to the DPMS/KAC style as well but dont quote me on it.

That rumor, which got started on ARF.com, was denied by Noveske.

BTW, the reliability issue of modded M-14 mags was due to improperly executed mods.

Damn I was wishing it was true.

You never know, they may add DPMS style to their inventory some time in the future.

The new Armalite Gen-2 style mags have some revisions, IIRC the feed lips and followers are slightly different than standard M1A mags to enhance reliability in the AR10 platform... I would recommend buying the Armalite Gen 2's instead of modding M1A mags. My AR10 Gen 2's work great.

It seems that legally owned pre-ban 20 round M1A mags modified to function in the AR10 could be the ticket in a featureless rifle, correct?

OLL Lower, Fixed stock, MMG, muzzle break and pre-ban M1a mags would be a legal configuration in Kali, correct?

thanks.

The Armalite 1st generation mags still work in M14's but they do not trip the M14's bolt hold open. The 2nd gen mags do not work in M14's and are AR-10 specific in that they have a rib along the back of the mag where the M14 mag tab would be.

I believe that RRA takes either the FN or HK91 mags that are alot cheaper than the proprietary mags by DPMS or Armalite.

Correct, except you would need a muzzle brake.
