With A M4 collapsable stock (basic) , what is the shortest upper complete half you can put together? Basically what is with in 30 inches .......also can you mount A foward grip even if you have A BB or other setup ? I was thinking not.

The limiting factor on your upper is that it requires a total length of 16" on the barrel (could be shorter barrel with welded muzzle device - as long as 16" minimum barrel length).

If you use a magazine lock such as the BB you can have ALL the banned features, including forward grip.

my setup had a 14.5 inch barrel and a FH permanently attached to get exactly 16 inch barrel lenght with a over all length of 31.5. with the stock fully collapased.

An OAL 16" barrel and a carbine receiver extension will yield a rifle just over 31".

In essence, unless you build an SBR or use a folding stock, there's no way to get under 30".

Same set up with my last AR..As close as you would ever want to get..

Why would anyone want an 11.5" barrel with 5.5" attachment on their rifle? I'd rather have a 15.5 or 16" barrel on mine.

If he ever moves to a SBR-legal state, he could pull the long flash hider off then. Of course, he could also cut down a 16" barrel, but that might not be the greatest idea because of the different locations of the gas ports.
