Are there any caveats transporting gun between here and the Dakotas. Wife are I are thinking of taking an auto trip sometime this summer to the Black Hills. Can you transport the same way as we do here in the states from here to there?

Put it in a locked case and you'll have the protection of Federal laws that allow you to travel with a locked unloaded firearm anywhere.

It's almost a given that any State you transport through will have laws less stringent that California's. So as long as you follow what would be legal here, your going to be O.K. almost everywhere.
As Gene said, locked container in trunk. Pretty much the standard here too.

Handgun or long gun? This would be a great time to obtain a Utah concealed carry permit as both Dakotas are covered.
Regardless, consider doing some research on the gun laws of each state in which you'll be traveling, just to be sure.

Even longguns? Isn't in a gun bag in the trunk enough?

In general, that would be fine for a lot of western states, but there might be national park firearms issues etc where the case would give you the right of safe passage or whatever clause. I think the NRA successfully used this federal statute to get a guy off in NYC who had a handgun as checked baggage from another flight connecting to somewhere not in NYC.

Send me a PM when you know your travel schedule; I travel alot for business but if I'm in town, I can take you to our local range - the Badlands ;)

Bundo, I travel all over the US in a motorhome and I always take guns with me. Locked in a container, unloaded and seperate from the driver's area will keep you legal. It's never been a problem or a worry, even going through the border inspection stations some states have.
Best part, some states allow open carry!

Read Dakota's gun laws and the other states that you're passing through.
