I was planning on buying a RRA complete lower and a CMMG complete upper and I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a color difference? Also would this combo fit well together?

Also which do you think is better quality CMMG complete lower or RRA complete lower?

I understand your question but do you really care about the color match? The parts should work no problem.

if they dont match then i might just get a CMMG complete rifle. Is there much of a difference in quality between CMMG and RRA complete lowers? other than the 2 stage trigger on RRA

have a cmmg lower.. fixed stock ... MMG setup with the mid-length handguard and muzzle break by smith... seems to work OK... not worried about the slight color diff... the stock is off my old Bushmaster registered gun which now has the cmmg collapsable and a Noveske 14.5 upper with the pinned vortex .... pair of nice shootin' guns so far..

Your CMMG upper will be darker than your RRA lower.

I've never seen a CMMG upper but I know the CMMG lowers have a different finish. Almost a semi-gloss, metallic finish to them.

Yeah the CMMG lower def has a darker slicker finish.

you do realize that, even within the same manuf, that uppers and lowers often don't match in finish.

i know the brand wasnt mentioned by the OP, but MEGA uppers have the same finish as cmmg lowers. ( mine is an exact match) as to RRA vs CMMG i have no experience. but from what i've seen a little clp will bring most upper/lower finish colors awfully close. hth

Do you guys get equally wrapped up in the finish on your hammers and screwdrivers?

I will let you in on a little secret, when you're shooting your rifle you can't see whether the finish matches...

Let me say this,

Last I remember, RRA were machined by CMT which uses a flat black mil-spec HAIII finish.

CMMG were machined by LAR which uses a black Teflon-based finish which is slightly glossy.

IMHO, Since they use different methods to finish their uppers & lowers, There will be a noticeable difference in appearance.

It is less noticeable when you coat them in oil or CLP. HTH.

I agree with Omega... Does color and finish really matter?

If color and finish matter, have them duracoated. They will match perfectly.

My CMMG lower and CMMG upper are totally different shades of black. It only bugged me for about a minute.

If finish is an issue - why not just get a complete RRA or cmmg ar?

I just got lucky. My CMMG lower and my LMT upper match near perfectly... If they didnt it probably would bug me...

Well, I may be a color weenie also, I'm not a fan of the "Frankenrifle" look, especially with what we have to pay for this stuff right now. The CMMG stuff has a Teflon coating that presents a Krylon spraypaint look. Looks cheaper, as opposed to Milspec IMO.

Thanks for the info guys. Which complete lower do you guys think is better quality? CMMG or RRA?

If I'm gonna put $1800 into a rifle (that would normally cost $1100), IT HAD BETTER FREAKiN MATCH. If lowers were back to $129, LPK $59, decent upper $495- OK, I would not care as much. Between the CMMG and RRA lowers- The holes will be in the same place, and they will be the same size. Quality, I would go RRA simply because of appearace. CMMG can call it Teflon or whatever they want, but the finish looks like cheap spray paint. It reminds me of those Eagle Arms rifles from the 90's.

both are nice...personally I would lean toward RRA

color is the least thing to worry about, you need to worry about finding any upper, lower, parts and decent priced ammo.

I would hate to see how the "color matchers" react when their brass deflector get dinged up....

As long as it works, I don't care if the colors match.

If you don't like the colors, refinish it to the color you want.

CMMG lowers have a teflon coated finish, they are slick and smooth, so appear darker

RRA lowers are satin finish with a non-glossy coating, so they appear lighter

like someone else said, nothing a little CLP on the less glossy part won't fix

I duracoated my homemade lower today and it actually matches my Armalite upper exactly. It's amazing. I guess I mixed the ratios just right. I hope I can do it again on my next one. :)
