Here's a repost of my reply to a similar question asked on Glocktalk last week. I attended the 4 day defensive handgun course last week at Front Sight:

--------

It was an awesome experience - I will be returning for the advanced classes at some point!

The pace is quick, and you need to be mentally and physically prepared to keep up (i.e. no late nights at the local casinos!), but the instructors are patient and will take the time to make sure each student understands and properly learns each new task/skill. The curriculum is excellent, and each step has been carefully planned and scheduled to build on the baseline skills established during the first two days.

You start off with learning basic handling skills (stance, grip, clearing drills, focus on the front sight, and trigger control - basically all of the elements that make up what they call the "The Three Secrets"), progressing to dry practice, then firing drills starting out at 3 yards and progressing up to 15 yards. The classes progress rapidly from there to dynamic targets, timed shots, after-action drills, malfunction clearing drills, then combining all of these base skills into one continuous sequence.

Day 3 you learn to safely shoot from concealment, adding tactical drills (room clearing, door entry, etc.), including an actual live fire run through a three room house/hostage scenario, followed by a night session learning proper stance and light usage.

Day 4 is a blast, combining everything you've learned to date, capped by a "Man on Man" competition shooting at articulated steel targets, then a scored skills assessment test that determines the type of certificate you'll graduate with (Distinguished, Graduate, and Achievement). No matter how you score, you will be a MUCH better shooter than when you started, regardless of your prior experience.

FWIW - I won the Range 1A Man on Man comp, but missed the Distinguished cert by 1 point (dammit)!! I loved every minute of the class, but as ktmracetec says, I am hurting today and look like a lobster. But I'd go again next week if I could.

Here's a couple pics taken during the skills assement test. I was too busy reloading to take any pictures on Days 1-3...anyone who has ever attended understands!

-----------

Som additional comments - there is a bit of a sales pitch for the lifetime memberships during lunch, but it's an optional thing (you can ignore or pay attention as you'd like) and very low key. I personally found the benefits worthwhile and did buy a Patriot membership.
