If you needed a .22 for the long haul would you want a Old school semi-auto like a Marlin 60 or a 10/22 or one of those Winchester thigs that look like a tube fed 10/22 clone or even a Nylon 66 , or would you want a GSG 5 or some new Austrian or Swiss Rimfire AW wannabee or a plain & simple AKT-98/WASR 22/RPK 22 Romanian AKM in Rimfire , or a Lever gun like a Marlin 39 or Henry or vintage Ithaca model 72 ?

show me...........all the conversions I have seen, seem to take maching & skill, not that I couldn't do it;)
but easier to do an AR if SHTF, drop in parts everywhere.

I just sold my GSG 5 yesterday, like my 10/22s more, got a few tricked out ones.
I know I can carry a metric **** load of .22LR compared to .308 or .223:D

Wow, I'd forgotten all about those. One of the many guns I drolled over as a kid. Ah, memories.

I'd go for a 10/22, though. Millions of 'em out there. Fairly accurate and reliable. Easy to find parts and magazines.

For a semi-auto, a 10/22 is probably your best bet. Easy to find parts for it, easy to customize and reliable as sin.

But "for the long haul", I'd prefer a .22 bolt/lever rifle with a tubular magazine. The magazine can't get lost, the action helps ensure you aim your shots and you can't burn up a pile of ammo in 9 seconds.

I'll stick with my 10/22. Right now it's all stock with the addition of a 4x scope. I asked this question before, but no one really knew the answer... how long can you keep rounds in an original 10/22 mag? Is it more like a revolver or like a typical magazine?

If I have to stick to a rifle, I'd go with the Spike's dedicated 22lr AR. If pistol counts, I'd go with the S&W model 41.

Just to make it confusing, there is a CZ 452 model called the "Scout." It is a junior rifle, not a takedown.

A .22 semi pistol with some hypervelocity ammo like Velocitors or Super Maximums would be good enough. If it's out of pistol range, a .22 isn't going to be powerful enough to do much anyhow (on humans at least).

And yet another Savage 24 - the Camper (24C) this time - .22 over 20 gauge.

http://maxicon.com/guns/savage24c/24c_full_setup.jpg

I'd pick something different, personally, but it's a fun gun. If I had to choose a rifle, I'd seriously consider the Marlin 60, unless I wanted to spend the price of the gun again on mags, in which case a 10/22 would be a good bet.

I will for sure post a range report when I finally get her out...

As for looking for one, I found a few on gunbroker and actually lucked out and found a pawn shop that was willing to send me the one they had listed from Oregon. About the same time however I placed a WTB ad here and found a guy willing to part with his for less than what the Pawn Shop wanted to sell theirs for. It was no brainer...Keep looking, eventually someone will need a new part for their latest build and sell off the scout that they never shoot...

Hate to be that guy, but as I have no .22 here (I do with my Dad) I'd just Holster the Colt Commander(love that gun) and Lug around whatever Rifle I decided upon. (likely a bolt action). If SHTF a .22 wouldn't be the only gun I grab.

True, but it would be *one* that I did grab since I can carry a heck of a lot more ammunition and I have more .22's than anything else.
