When does the 30 days begin for handgun purchase? From the beginning or end of my 10 day waiting period?

From the beginning, see the date (upper left) on your copy of Dealer Record of Sale (DROS)... 30 days from that date.

New Handgun Purchases Limited to One Per 30-Days
It is unlawful for a person to apply to purchase more than one handgun within any 30-day period.
(Penal Code 12072(a).)

Its beginning of purchase + 30 days

So is it 30 days from purchase, or 30 days from the start of your last DROS?

Will a dealer let you buy (in other words pay for) two handguns, DROS one now, and keep the other sitting in the back room until you can DROS another one? i.e 30 days?

Yes, as long as they got your $ and you wait.

And PPT is still exempt, correct?

I bought one from a dealer. I can buy (and DRoS) another handgun PPT anytime.

Sound right or did something change?

Wrong 30 - 24 hour periods from the time the DROS was transmitted. (started)

10 day and/or pick up day are meaningless.

One time I DROSed a second handgun within 10 minutes of the end of the previous 30 - 24 hour period.

Yes a lot of dealers will put a handgun on layaway (with deposit) holding it until your 30 day period is over so you can DROS the second handgun.

You know, in these hard economic times, I am finding it hard to keep up with this law. I've been trying to buy a new handgun every 30 days but sometimes I can't come up with the scratch. Here it is April but I've only bought two new handguns this year. I sure hope the Atty. General does not break down my door for not keeping up with the law. You guys are right, this state's gun laws suck sometimes.
