I just read that too on AOL. Makes me sick that it's another act to give law-abiding gun owners a bad name.

How does a 5150 manage to do this (rhetorical, of course)????

Again, this whole incident is a shame.

Have to feel for the family and friends of the kid (not so much for mom), and anyone who had to witness it. Especially the guy standing two feet from it.

In another comment here, I said that there appears to be a 'mental health crisis' evolving in this country.

Would not this tragedy be another example of such a 'crisis'?

As I've said before, and will say again, if we're to have any aspect of socialism in this country, would not the provision of adequate mental health care for those who may be 'at risk' for such extreme situations (insofar as care can be provided without infringing on the civil rights of individuals) be one of our first public priorities?

sadly

She had a history of mental illness? On one hand that says the son shouldn't have gone with her to the range and/or advised her not to go at all, but on the other hand it's remarkably non-specific.

Yellowfin I thought along the same lines as I read the story. I am wondering what the rest of the story is or how this is going to play out as more of the facts come out. I really do feel sorry for the rest of the family in dealing with this.

I also feel for the range operator. You can just see the inquiry coming - "why did you rent a gun to a person with a history of mental illness? Why don't you/ranges have better screening?"

To Asphodel's point - we are at a time of crisis. The jobless rate is through the roof and even those with jobs are concerned about loosing their job. Stories abound of people who can't pay bills, investment funds destroyed, home equity wiped out, etc. These types of stresses cause borderline stable people to go over the edge and commit desperate acts. Yes, all these recent tragedies are linked - not in some uber conspiracy, but by the human reaction of a less stable person to extreme stress. And yes, I know they are not experiencing combat stress, but not knowing how you are going to provide for your family, or being convinced that an unsurvivable situation is coming and there is nothing you can do is an extreme stress.

Panic kills. Expect more family murder suicides, suicide by police murder, and suicide by public murder events in the months ahead. But don't over react - as a percentage of the fatality rate they will be almost insignificant - however for those affected they will be anything but. The real tragedy is the wildly sensational news coverage of these events will spur copy cats and increase the sense of panic in those already susceptible. Not to mention the cries for Big Daddy Government to save us by removing our freedoms.

Only when the economic crisis subsides will these tragedies return to their "normal" level.

Spot on here.

And the administration is actively fearmongering for its own political aims.
