I met this guy Jeff at the Costa Mesa gun show last year sometime and he was selling some of his collection of very nice wood grips. At the last two shows I noticed he now had his own booth. This guy has turned a hobby into a little business. He has some of the nicest wood grips I have ever seen. Some of his exotic wood selections are trully beautiful.
Anyway, I recently picked up a 1980s Springfield MilSpec that has some nice bluing on the sides. When I saw these grips I just had to have them, I thought they would compliment the bluing nicely.
Enjoy the pics.

Here's the guys website which seems to still be under construction. Hopefully he'll have some pictures up soon. Look for him at an upcoming show.

Would it technically be thread crapping if I posted the name of a company that, in my opinion, makes incredible one-off custom 1911 grips that blow these ones out of the water?

Thread crapping is only against the rules in the marketplace. Crap away.

But you could be accused of "trolling" so watch out!

I just see this as a discussion of nice grips. Lets see whatever you have, my 1911 might need a change-up.

ETA: To the OP, those do look real nice on that mil-spec.

Yeah, let's see em. These grips are nice so the ones you are talking about must be great.

All right all right, I'll thread cra . . . I mean, "add to the discussion."

The company's name is called Wicked Grips (http://wickedgrips.com/). The main guy who does the work and runs the shop is Ed Strange. Their focus is mostly 1911 grips, but I've seen them do projects for other guns as well, including Berettas and Ruger Redhawks.

He's a member of the American Pistolsmiths Guild, and occasionally does projects for them to help fundraise. You can see some examples of his work done for the APS, as well as other magazine articles that feature his work, here (http://wickedgrips.com/media).

Some examples of their work:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/KnightForums/Guns/WickedGrips02.jpg
This is a 1911 that Wicked Grips made with Gemini Customs (http://www.geminicustoms.com/). That is a $6000+ 1911.

Grips made from Damascus steel. No two grip sets are alike.

They also do all kinds of inlay work, and can put multiple types of wood into the same grip.

Check out their gallery (http://wickedgrips.com/gallery1/?level=album&id=2) for more pictures.

These guys are truly custom, which has both an upside and a downside. The downside is that they don't have many grips "in stock." But, the fact that they will make just about any kind of grip you want for your 1911, is a pretty nice bonus.

Wicked grips are awesome. I also like their coffin style cases.

Tell me about it. The owner of Wicked Grips frequently posts on another forum I frequent, and when he posted pictures of that Gemini Customs 1911 I just about crapped my pants.

I too have purchased grips from Jeff, and can attest that he is a great guy. For those of you who dont know what my day job is, I buy and sell high-end exotic wood.

In fact, looking at the first photo, I am pretty sure that is my stuff that he used.

What dre me to him was the exotic wood, but also check out his mammoth tusk and molar stock. It is out of this world.

Jeff is a solid, local guy. I use him for 100% of my custom grips.

I like hakan and esmerelda for 1911 grips. I just checked out the link in the first post. There are some beautiful grips for sale. Good prices too.

Different strokes for different folks. I'm sure each maker's work vary in price as and that Jeff guy works out of Monterey Park which is local so that's a plus in my book.

Those wicked gips are really nice looking.
I wish Jeff had some good picks up on his site cause the grips I got don't even look that great compared to some of the other woods he had. I just thought the color of these would look right. Some of the woods this guy had were awesome.
I have looked up Esmeralda and while I thought they were nice they were way expensive.

From talking with him, I get the impression that his new website is almost done and set to launch. I would expect to see some stellar photos soon.

Did you see the black horn with the gold veining? I think he calls it "cosmic" something or other?

I'm definitely going to keep your guy's site in mind. It looks like he makes grips for single-actions, and I've been considering picking up a set for my Ruger Blackhawk.

Hey guys,

I'm the guy who made the grips for JohnnyBangBang. That pair was my personal favorite. If you look close, it appears there are faces like ghouls or something.

My site is complete and you can browse it to see whose grips are better. I am in the process of making some sambar stag and mammoth ivory grips. Once they are done I will upload the pics and I'll let you guys be the judge.

Here are two pictures of images a customer found in the wood while looking at my grips. One looks like there is a face in them and the other looks like there is a flying angel.

@ANDREWMENDEZ, a pair like these would run $75. I have a pair similar to JohnnyBangBang's that are a real dark red.

@JohnnyBangBang, send me a PM and I'll hook you up with a set of blued allen head screws.

Will you be at the Ontario show?

Yes, I will be at the Ontario gun show. I try to make it to all the Los Angeles area gun shows: Ventura, Ontario, Glendale, and Costa Mesa.

Last time, I was positioned in the middle of the building across from the gun registration table and I should have the same placement May 16-17. To recognize me, I have a bright yellow banner above my booth.

I welcome everyone to come see my grips in person to decide whose is better!

Just found this thread so I'm exhuming it since I just got my DW Valor and there are lots of new threads on 1911s. Just talked to Jeff and found out he's right down the street from me and will be going over today.
