Just got wind of this one from Facebook. Our least favorite person from New York, Carolyn McCarthy, just ramrodded a bill through the House that targets youth to divert them away from outdoor activities and afiliations which could introduce them to firearms. How do they accomplish this wizardry? Take away their free time via "service learning", which EXCLUDES Boy Scouts, 4H, FFA, etc. because they're church affiliated, teach religious values, ADVOCATE PUBLIC POLICY, etc. Scouting gets a lot of people into rifle shooting that otherwise never would have had the opportunity or inclination. It also teaches civic involvement, like attending city council meetings, writing Congressmen letters on issues, learning municipal codes, state laws, and other important parts of how our nation works. This bill is aimed at killing it.

This "GIVE" act is a disaster for us. "Change" it is...to change society by destroying hundreds of traditional civic institutions, many of which are our big allies in the RKBA fight.

Basically it encourages community service and participation in government strongly suggested programs while funneling them away from lots of existing ones available already through church and schools and civic organizations as aforementioned like Scouting. Also would take away from youth athletics, which as you know are a backbone of character building and other important life and social skills. Also this will cut down their time with us--can't take a kid to the range or the field if he/she's out doing Obama's slave work.

Anyone who has kids, had a childhood where you enjoyed anything I mentioned or others like it, or at very least knows other people who do/did needs to raise hell about this. I know our own two senators won't oppose this--I'm calling other states' senators instead.

Oh, and by the way that list of 65 plus all the R's who we're counting on to not pass an AWB or something like it: this passed the House with over 300 votes. If McCarthy wants it, Pelosi wants it. If Pelosi wants it, it gets passed. This should serve as an advanced warning.

This is going to sound kind of funny coming from an Eagle Scout, but I honestly don't think the BSA should get federal money with their current stances towards gays and atheists. In my libertarian utopia I would prefer that no private organization get such funding, so I oppose this bill on principle regardless.

As a former cub scout and boy scout, I also agree.

At least the original version of this bill didn't pass - that formed a Commission to decide if the service - needed to be "mandatory" or not...

Gee... uhhmmm I think... the commission has found it to be "mandatory" for all youths... i.e. instant slavery.

Well I don't agree and neither did the SCOTUS. Wanna be gay? Then be gay when you're 18 and can no longer be a Boy Scout. Wanna be an athiest? Be one when you're 18, and can do anything you want except drink. Private orgs shouldn't get such funding, but as long as ACORN and hundreds of others do, the BSA should too.

I eagerly await the quote from the US Constitution about "the separation of church and state."

You support the direct public funding of bigotry? Nice.

In the same sentence you say "shouldn't" and then "should".

Because ACORN gets illegitimate money, so should the BSA? Because corruption and injustice is prevalent, a Scout should go along with it?
The critical thing, that leads a nation to switch from abundance to selfishness, is when they vote themselves benefits from the national treasury.
“When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.”

"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of governement. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy

That's all you can think to say of the Scouts?

Like I said earlier, I was both a Cub Scout and a Boy Scout. Proudly.

However, having been both those changes nothing. The BSA is by very nature an exclusionary and bigoted group due to their public statements and policy against gays.

You can't deny this. This is a fact.

As a private group, I have no problem with this. Private groups can be as racist, bigoted, intolerant or exclusionary as they want. That is the freedom that they have in this country.

However, they should not receive any kind of Federal assistance or funding.

The Boy Scouts don't let girls in. They are bigoted on those grounds alone!!~~! *pounds fist*
