Did the Mini-14 fall under the provisions of the former AW ban?

some did but for the most part no. some had bayo lugs and flash hidders.

It was not banned by name.

However, if it was configured as an Assault Weapon the owners had the choice of either removing the AW features so it wasn't considered an AW or register it as an AW.

i believe he is talking about the federal ban wich there is no registration and included some models that were for leo only.

Some "normal looking" Mini14 (some of the "GB" versions, I seem to recall) have flash hiders. These are considered 'by features' AWs in CA.

Removal of this flash hider - providing no pistol grip/folding stock - will render these guns into non-AW status.

There's an old sore with lot of folks of Bill Ruger sucking up and making some deals with the devil, including testifying in favor of the AWB, in exchange for keeping the Mini 14 off the list in 94. May he rot.

Ahh he is dead now... AND rotted 10 times over I am sure... So get over it... let's work on fixing stuff not digging up old sh*t that has nothing to do to help todays issues.

Ruger is a different company now, different leadership. Ruger & his petty prejudices are dead.

[S&W has also reinvented itself under wholly new mgmt since the Clinton-era HUD drama.]

I note Ruger is now selling a "tactical" Mini14 with telestock and 20rd magazine.
(Glow-in-the-dark paint for your barn door is not a factory-supplied option, however.)

It should be noted that Ruger has supported a lot of NRA/ILA legal matters and we're better off for them.

Prior to the Ca ban, I knew I wanted the flash hider, sight and B-lug so I registered it before I got the parts but did install them before the ban took effect. B-lugs were never part of the Ca ban just the federal one.

Ruger is on the right track now. They now sell their 20-rounders to us 'normal folks' and have become one of the leaders as far as CCW-friendly handguns are concerned. I think it's safe to say that Ruger is not the Elmer Fudd outfit it was under old Bill.

Yes, I too had a 1989-1990 vintagge Mini14 rancher reg'd as an AW. (Factory stainless folder, but no bayo lug or flash hider.)

It felt nice but Ruger apparently used Comet as trigger lube, was SKS/AK accurate at best.

I sold it for $950ish before the Fed ban fell, and bought more AR stuff. I still do have the hicap mags for it.

I kinda wish I'd kept it because knowing what I do now, a great gunsmith (m24armorer) can take a quality Colt chrome-lined barrel and fit it into a Mini 14.

I have one that I had to have the flash hider removed so I did not have to register it, I still have it and I still have the flash hider for it, its a safe queen now that I have my AR.

I did the opposite and registered mine.

She now has a folding stock and one day will have her barrel cut down to 16 inches. I plan on making her as "evil as possible.
