Sorry for not answering in a timly manner. I was doing things..

Sort of right; the man was. It is a stylish Trade mark that I have with designing specific types of components that could benifit from the removal of weight. It really is just my way of designing things. With out getting into a long explanation. It also has a use on my end with manufacturing them.

Thanks, Ken

Happy shooting.

Yep, that was the next question - does it fit all redi-mags (I'm thinking it should, since I can't see any difference in offset with any of the models). If it's functional with a Redi-Mag, I'll pick one up.

quick update.

I have a few versions of these from various makers over the years
some have lasted some have not

We ran an aprox of 450 reps yesterday of load 2 shoot 2 drills with and without redi mags also double feed malfunction clearance drills. this unit took it pretty well. and asked for more so we did we dropped the gun 10 -12 times onit sides with no ill effect or breakadge bending or the likes.

ryang

I PM'd this to tango5 but he didn't bite. I think EBRs should have a 3/8" extension on the left side that goes below the bend. This would allow you to manipulate the EBR when holding the grip with your left hand just as easily as with your right. That would make it truly ambidextrous.

trinydex
04-17-2009, 3:21 PM
it already is truly ambidextrous....

think about a lefty reload. unless you have an ambicatch you'd hit the button with your thumb. put the box in the box and then sweep your thumb down on the ebr. this is almost as fast as a right handed reload.

the shortcoming being that lefties always have to eject and then pull a mag instead of doing it simultaneously, unless they have an ambicatch.

if you want to lock the bolt back that's easy as a left hander anyway, but the ebr would make it much easier to press the bar to hold the bolt open

ryang
04-17-2009, 9:10 PM
I disagree, and yes I have an ambicatch. The point is to do all this without shifting your grip.

trinydex
04-20-2009, 9:33 AM
i'm not sure where the method i cited above required you to shift your grip... it's just slower because everything is done by the right hand.

how exactly would this tab you're suggesting work?

ryang
04-21-2009, 12:14 AM
how exactly would this tab you're suggesting work?

Consider what the EBR allows you to do: holding the pistol grip in your right hand, you can activate or release the bolt hold using your right hand index finger without shifting your grip.

When holding the pistol grip with your left hand, the current EBR design allows you to activate the bolt hold using your left hand index finger without shifting your grip. If you add a 3/8" extension, you can use that nub to release the bolt hold using your left hand index finger as well.

trinydex
04-21-2009, 12:25 AM
is this a vertical nub or a horizontal nub

ryang
04-21-2009, 9:50 AM
I don't think a horizontal nub would work. I was thinking of a vertical one just below the bend. Here's a crude ascii drawing:

X <-attaches to existing bolt catch
X
X
X
XXXXXX <-lever actuated by right index finger
X
X <-nub actuated by left index finger

I'm sorry for the delayed response. I like the idea. I'm currently working on a few new products. 2 of wich are EBR related. If a customer has something to say I will listen. I have been really busy working on items for my local SWAT team and 3 different Police Departments so it has taken some time to write back.
If you would like to have a 3/8ths nub on the EBR I would be happy to make one for you! I will also make some to test with the other items I am testing. Please feel free to PM me.
Oh! and you are correct. The current EBR is not an ambidextrious item.
It is designed around the right handed shooter. But new items are comming
in the next week.
Phase 5 Tactical is focused on making new and useful components available to the people who need them most. I current fund the prototyping and fabrication for the SWAT team and Police Departments that I work with. Nobody should be left standing alone!

Thanks for the support, Stay safe!

so it would be a push in and out instead of up and down (like it is for the right handed shooters)

Correct. Due to the geometry of the bolt catch you can't easily do up/down with the left index finger. However, if you had a similar bend on the right side then you could have both sides manipulate via in/out movement. One forum member did that on tango5's EBR. Here's another ascii sketch:

any thoughts on (1) a version that is milled out like an ibeam to discard unneeded material and (2) making a slight curved tip at the finger area, maybe with a striated grip pattern & grip striations up at the larger bolt release pad itself?

what is that black mark on the face of the ebrv2???

yeah, rather odd.. looks to me you can see the original bolt catch so it is looks like a cut out, press fit on over a bolt catch release, then welded on

also.. why is this in Ken's thread, using the same name product, with a similar profile/milling, at 5 cents cheaper??? is there some relationship here I am missing, or did you just post up in someone else's selling thread??

ken_btc
05-30-2009, 3:53 PM
The Play that you have has always been there... The reason you notice it now is because you now have a lot more leverage to move a bolt catch. The stock bolt catch is short and was never utilized the way the EBR is. The bolt catch on every rifle has the same play since they are all made to the same specs.
Some US Navy Seals / Police / SWAT are using this and their rifles do the same thing. It does not hinder it's performance. Every bolt catch has the same play no matter what company builds the lower.

I noticed it when I installed the original lpk and knew it was more pronounced with this b/c of the extra leverage, good to know that they all do this, I guess I just didn't notice it when I got to play with Uncle Sams :o

I finally got to use my 1pc Extended Bolt Catch at the range. IMO, this is a must have, even for casual shooters. It is much easier than the button and greatly enhances the ergonomics. It also gives you a place to rest your finger when your not firing your rifle, finger off the trigger and out of the trigger guard.

Wow...quick shipping!

I sent my payment on the 2nd, and received the part today, the 4th.

The part seems to be well made.

I ordered it because of the reviews, it's looks, and the fact that it was the best "Battery Assist Device" on the market to date.

I have to say that I tried contacting KEN a few different times via PM (on this forum), and as well as through personal email...with no response.

Oh well, let's just see how the part holds up. (Without my specific questions having been answered).

My initial observation of the part is good...very good.

It seems to be well made, and the look is sleek and clean.

I ordered a POF P-415 lower which just arrived at the dealers today. So tomorrow I will drive there to do all the DROS junk, and do a prefit to see how it fits and functions. (More later).

With no further adeu (is that how you spell it?), here are a few pictures for yall to see. Especially the folks who are considering purchasing one. (Notice the decent welds, and the green-looking filler on the front).

In Christ: Raymond

UPDATE: Just noticed something. The part that actually goes through the trigger, which is activated by the trigger finger, is solid steel. But the bolt catch/release itself is an MIM part. (Notice the seam down the middle, and the little circle on the side). When placing a magnet on the long bent part, the magnet is strongly attracted with an audible CLICK. But when the magnet is placed on the MIM part of the piece, the magnetic attraction is not as strong. Less ferrous content on the MIM part.

Woops,

I guess I never updated my post on this thread.

Just wanted to thank Ken for the offer, as he contacted me and we figured something out.

Anyhoo, below are a few before and after pictures.

The first picture shows my original EBRv2 device after having been drilled to lighten it...which did not work.

The other pictures show the new, LIGHTENED, EBRv2 device.

They advertise that it is up to 30% lighter...and it is. The original device weighed-in at .8 ounces, and still weighed the same after I drilled it. But the new device weighed-in at .6 ounces, which is a 30% weight reduction. (.8 ounces - 30% = .56 ounces).

Thanks, Ken!!

It works perfectly on my POF.

I have a buddy who purchased the Magpul BAD device...and he likes my PHASE 5 EBRv2 (http://www.phase5tactical.com/g_products/ebr.html) better.

There's just something about a solid ONE PIECE system, vs a 3-piece system, that screams reliability. (The more parts there are, the more chance of one part failing).

I have several BADs and one EBRv2. The EBRv2 is hands down better. It isn't even close. I plan on getting more.

Hey, Ken,

I just thought of something. You are welcome to use my pictures for your advertisements. (There are a few more pix HERE (http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=269526) if you want to look for a different view).

Your EBRv2 is installed onto a POF rifle (.223/5.56), with a Redi-Mag. Everything works perfectly with your device. (Just making sure you know I am using a REDI-MAG, and not a READY MAG, as there is a difference).

You are more than welcome, as you were "cool" with me in our dealings. ;)

Thanks again.

Note to everyone:

You cannot beat the EBRV2. It is the sex. I had mine on the rifle I took to the Sac show, and I had people return the BAD levers they purchased so they could use one of these instead. Again, to recap:

Buy it. Now.

Which redi-mag is that, that fits with the ebr-2?

I have the newest version Redi-Mag. The older version would eject the spent magazine, AS WELL AS THE NEW MAGAZINE, at the same time.

The newest Redi-Mag will only eject the new magazine, which is preferred.

Call Mike at SOLAR TACTICAL (http://www.solartactical.com/main.sc)for specifics on the newest version of the Redi-Mag. That is where I purchased mine, and he is a SF Bay Area local shooter. (And all round swell guy). ;)

So how is this a better product than the BAD lever?

From someone with one EBRv2 and 3 Magpul BADs...

Firstly, the BAD levers will eventually break. They have and they will continue to. They are a two piece, bolt on polymer lever. The EBRv2 is one piece and metal, it isn't going anywhere, it'll last longer than most of the stuff on your rifle. The BAD isn't the only two piece lever out there, and like the rest of them they all tend to fail at the bolt.

Secondly, I don't know about you but I have small hands. The BAD is tiny and I do have to adjust my grip just to push the lever up to lock the bolt back. The EBRv2 is "meatier" allowing no adjustment at all, I just straighten my trigger finger and push up and the bolt locks back. It is a tiny difference but a big one as far as comfort goes. I don't like shifting my grip and stretching my finger for the BAD when I know the EBRv2 is much easier to use.

ArkinDomino,

my buddy is currently using the Magpul BAD device, and I do not like the "feel" of it.

It seems to wiggle around a bit more than the EBRv2 device. And because of this wiggle, you need to ensure you have a positive PUSH or LIFT UP on the device...because if it is not in the exact correct position, it will fail to function.

I don't know exactly what it is - but maybe being "meatier," the EBRv2 seems to be more solid and doesn't feel like it wiggles around as much. And because of that, it is not as finicky, and does not need to be in the exact, correct, position to work all the time.

When I manipulate my Phase 5 EBRv2, I always get a positive function. But with the BAD device, if it is not in the perfect position, it will not work, and it takes me an extra second or two to mentally process this and give it a second shot/try with my trigger finger.

Don't know if that made sense or not, but I'm trying to explaing how they are different to me, and why I prefer the Phase 5 EBRv2.

Just my thoughts...or psycho-babble rambling. ;)

ArkinDomino,

Magpul has some seriously SICK products to die for. (Ever seen their AR lower)?

But on this specific part, I have to lean towards the Phase 5 EBRv2.

By the way, don't drink too much of that Magpul Kool-Aid...or everything you look at will start to look like your avitar.

Ha ha ha. ;)

I just installed mine this weekend. It is a fantastic product, excellent design and factory-smooth finish.

Really, this one should be standard equipment on every AR.

And Raymond, your avatar makes me nervous. Not very christian to point your gun at strangers!
