I'm looking to build one really nice AR. If you had your choice of lower and upper, what would they be?

A buddy of mine recommends the POF Generation II. Can't figure out the difference between Gen II and Gen III.

Let's assume for now that price is not an issue. This is a .223 build.

Theres way too many options to answer this. If you want top tier quality look at lmt, colt, bcm, dd etc. I dont know much about the piston guns though.
Lower doesnt really matter

honestly most top brand AR-15 lowers are about the same

pay more if you want a fancy logo or nice CNC milled details

uppers vary more....this question is way to vague to answer

My favorite lower/upper setup? whatever i'm shooting

If you really want to build a super nice AR, POF, LMT, Noveske, LWRC

or if you want to be super pimp....get a Magpul lower....like $2k for stripped lowers on gunbroker, $4k for complete rifles

Are you talking lowers? Get the cheapest one and spend the money on a nice upper.

Get a LMT, LWRC, Noveske, Doublestar, Stag, or Territorial Gunsmith's lower receivers. Then, stick this badboy on top of your completed lower. I have the 16" vesion and couldn't be happier. Lwrc has an amazing product IMHO.

Troy M7A1, exactly as sold, plus an ambi selector, money and laws permitting. Basically a VLTOR VIS upper with Noveske barrel and Stag lower.

Thanks for all the help so far.

I picked up a SunDevil lower this afternoon locally. Now, i'm going to start shopping for uppers.

I still have no idea if i really need a gas piston upper....but i'll figure it out eventually.

Also can't decide on barrel length but i think its either 16" or 20".

Well heres a long thread discussing the differences but it may just make you more confused.

Gas pistons are cool in terms of how easy they are to clean, but you don't really "need" one. Go for the 16". Nice intermediate length that can do most anything you need acceptably well. And go midlength if you get a 16".

JP Enterprises upper with 16" or 18" barrel, you can place the rails where you want them.

If you can get your hands on one, definitely get a BCM (Bravo Co). Quality is top notch!

You can forget the GENII POF lowers, no longer making GENI or GEN II. You now have to pay $$$ for the GENIII!

My top choices for a awesome built AR15
LMT lower
Colt LPK
LMT (full auto) BCG
Colt Upper, (M4 profile with ramps)
DNTC Muzzel brake
Magpul CTR (Mil-spec)
H-buffer with Wolff Spring (can cause problems with .223 but worth it)
Magpul MAID grip
Magpul ASP
ARMS #40L BUIS
KAC M4 FF

I think you meant to say 5.56 not .223. Its cheaper to build a .223, but in the end you will have a firearm that is not reliable when firing 5.56, so why cheap out on the chamber. Go 5.56mm. I dont even think the higher end AR companies make a .223 chambered barrel.

Get the best quality you can. Colt, LMT, Noveske. Go with 223 if it's your first build, ammo is cheaper than .308 or anything else unless you go with a pistol round.

Now if I ever got the paperwork together I'd build a SBR in 458 socom. Hellishly expensive ammo, but it sure would be fun!

Some of you guys dont realize there are two types of AR15. .223 and 5.56. When you tell someone to build a .223, its like telling them to buy a .38 when you mean .357.

LMT Defender 2000 lower and a LMT upper

+1, I think i like my LMT Defender more than my Noveske N4;)
If you want a gas piston, get a LMT gas piston rifle. I never owned a POF but i would like too.
