From what I've seen it really depends on what you want as far like thickness, fireproofing, ect.

I've seen heavy duty fireproof safes around $1200 and wal mart "gun lockers" for a few hundred.

Home Depot has a small 14 gun Sentry safe for $400.00 bucks. i don't know if it is DOJ approved for California.

Pretty sure that is DOJ approved with 20-30 mins of fire protection if it's the one I am thinking I saw...

Stack on makes cheap metal lockers which are DOJ approved. You can find them for about $100 and stuff ten rifles in them if you try hard. Much better than nothing.

Outdoor Sportsman in Stockton has the smaller American Security safes with a 20 min fire rating under $500.00

nope I'm not, I already have a safe but might need a a cheaper one in the future... Although 12 guage is a bit on the thin side it's definately not bad for the price.
