Hello All,
This is a question about a gift family handgun coming from a Dad to his Son.
Son lives in California. I think it is a 6 shot revolver, definately not an auto with a capacity issue. Apparently, family transfers don't have to be drop tested like new guns.
I am trying to convince them to be sure and go thru with the required Cal 30 day handgun registration.
These guys are hard to push about getting things done.
I have read the State Law website. Nothing about this involves me...but I am the friend who reads the net and looks a law issues.
If the Son fails to get the 30 registration done, and he is caught...what is his penalty? Fine, Misdemeanor, Felony, ? The penalties are not listed in the state Gun Guide.

IIRC the only time it would come into play would be if he is caught commiting a crime. If he has the gun on him when committing a crime and it is not registered to him, then it is an additional charge added on.

you read badly
30 day rule is you canb only buy 1 new handgun per 30 days, or any handgun sold via mail or dealer sales not on consignment.
What your "FRIENDS" need to do is go to a FFL dealer & do the legal paper work called DROS dealer record of sale $25 + dealer $10
the gun also gets to sit there 10 days and a NCIS background check will be done on buyer.
buyer will also need a saftey handgun card to prove to the state he knows how to handle a handgun $25
in most states none of this is required
wasn't required here some 10-15 years ago either
if I worded anything wrong, don't worry, 27 people will reply to correct me:D

Also, ff dad is out of state then the family transfer must go through a FFL dealer.
If dad is in California as well, here is the mail registration form son will need. No 10 day wait with this form either.

He is talking about the thirty days you have to register a hand gun through an intra-family transfer, not buying a new one.
Here is a good thread for the regulations

Here is the form, just send in $19 to CA DOJ and this form and he is fine.

Hope it works out, also make sure he has his HSC.
