View Full Version : WTS: AR15 Extended Bolt Release

tango5

After a couple months of R&D, I have made an Ambi Extended Bolt Release. This allows you to control the bolt lock/release with your trigger finger. You can lock the bolt back, and release it without changing hands or dropping your rifle from the "ready" position. I have plenty of these made and in stock. They are CNC machined out of 6160 T6 billet aluminum, and secured by 2 stainless steel black oxide coated screws. (Screws in the photo are not black oxide coated).
There is a rear plate that goes behind the bolt catch, the screws screw into threads in the back plate. Once its snugged down, it doesn't move. It extends approximately 1/8" past the right side of the lower receiver, just enough to get your finger to operate it, without sticking out too far. This is 100% removable without permanent damage or marks left to your rifle. These parts are black anodized.

I am located in Pleasant Hill, (East San Francisco bay area). PM me for payment info. Thanks guys, and thanks to everyone who gave input and feedback on this design!

UPDATE: All sold out!!!!!! Will have more at a later date.

USPS Money Order is $40, PayPal is $41.66 ($1.66 PP fee's), or local pick up is $37. All prices include shipping.

very cool. I might be intrested in one. how does it attach to the bolt catch. I see the two screws but is there a bracket or something else.

Also, how far over to the right of the trigger does it extend? It is hard to tell from the pictures if the end of the extension sticks past the side of the trigger well.

I'll take one, local pick up. PM inc.

Edit: I wonder, is it possible to rubber coat the part your finger interfaces to reduce the sharpness of the edges and not impact the functioning of it? Like a 1/16" thick layer. Looks like it won't, just want to confirm that I can put something on it to thicken it up still have clearance.

My guess would be yes... read the original post... Usually something like this is not a high stress part btw but with "a couple months of R&D" usually stress test would be included :)

Stress tests have been done. I have shot roughly 600rds through my rifle with it, no problems, jams, hang ups, FTE, FTF, etc... as well as a few friends who have fired a total of 800-900rds between them on the same part installed on their rifles.

Its made out of 6160 T6 aluminum, air craft grade aluminum, your not going to break this part under normal firing conditions. I cant promise if your in a fire fight and your rifles get run over by a Humvee or gets shot at by an RPG that it will still hold up, lol.

Looks like it would be easier to hit the hold open also. Does it hit the reciever when you depress the HO? Looks like it would barely clear. Nice job!

Yes you can release and hold the bolt in the rear position with your trigger finger. I don't know what you mean by "HO". What ever it is, no it doesn't touch the receiver at all. When you install it, you can adjust it slightly, i do recommend that you adjust it to clear the receiver to avoid marking it.

How exactly is this Ambi? Im lefty and to me it doesnt seem like it would work with my trigger finger. The only way I see it working is if I used a mag hold with my right hand I could possibly use my thumb to lock the bolt...am I missing something?

I'm not trying to thread crap here, just wondering if it would work before dropping the $$ on it .

Ambi meaning you can operate the bolt catch with either left or right hand from either side of the rifle. You can use the bolt catch in the normal left hand fashion with this part installed. If you use a right trigger finger, you get another added function with it, you can lock the bolt to the rear.

Ah, got it. So for once Ambi is geared towards the righties...free bump for a nifty piece of kit.

Jicko
03-10-2009, 10:27 PM
Do you push-in (right to left motion) OR you slash-down (up to down motion) with your trigger finger to release your bolt? It seems short for "slash-down".....

T5: this is a great product, but you need a better name....

This is seriously NOT ambi.... a left hand shooter cannot use your device to "release" the bolt with his trigger finger.... unless he uses his right hand to hit on your device... then it may work

And this is not *just* a "bolt release".... it is a "bolt catch" too...

This is "trigger finger bolt catch/release" for the right hand shooters....

Update on shipping these to you guys who have pre-ordered and sent payment. I will have the EBR's tomorrow and will ship them on Friday. Most of them should arrive at your door by mid next week, possibly eariler depending on where you live.

I am leaving for Oregon tomorrow morning and they are shipping there, i will package them and ship them Friday morning, (March 20th) by USPS. I know a lot of you are asking when you will see them, and i don't want you guys to wait another week until i get back, so im going to take care of it while i am there.

For you local guys who want to pick up FTF, i will be back next Tuesday night, im free the rest of the week to FTF the parts, bring cash, lol.

A word of advice, when you tighten it down, tighten it evenly, if you crank down one side tight then try to do it on the other side, you will strip it out or damage it. If this is done, i cant replace it. Tighten it down snug, then put a 1/4 turn more.

Another idea from a member here made, get a can of that rubber/plastic coating for pliers and tools. The stuff where you dip the handle into it and let it dry. Makes for a nice rubber texture on the end where your finger operates the EBR.

Let me know when you have more Jason.
As for Magpul getting upset about this, maybe I dont understand. Your design is quite a bit different then what is on Travis's rifle.
Being that, then why wouldnt there be an issue with extended charging handle releases? There are several.
What about slings for that reason?
How could they have any issue seeing how you came up with your own design to resolve the same issue?
I for one thank you for making the effort to get this into the market. I had asked Magpul at the Shotshow when they would have somthing.. They had no idea.
I feel there is little worry over Magpul eventually making a ton of money on this.
Its so simple, that I imagine it will be OME soon. It just makes a MASSIVE difference in working this rifle system.
No more taking your hand off the grip.. Very nice. Good job.

Just read your response Jason. Thanks for answering it.
I applaud whoever was the original inventor of the concept. Its wonderfully simple.
Magpul will make tons of money off this, along with Travis.
No disrespect Jason, as I would have spent my money with them had they offered it.
I made the effort to do so at the Orlando Show.

I even made my own from Sureshots. Thats what seems to be what his design is based on. As the mounting is the same.

Yours is better then what I created, and cost me slightly less.Thank you for a quality product at a very fair price.

Looking to get more when you have them.

Thanks, well its hard to provide proof of who had the idea first. I had a rough idea in my head back in August of 1995. It was Ft. Jackson South Carolina, the first day we learned how to operate the M16A2 in Basic Training. It boggled my mind why they would have the bolt release on the left side and had to do the hand switch-aroo to lock the bolt in the rear position. IMO at the time it didn't make sense to do all that work and drop the rifle from the ready position. I didn't react on my idea since i had much bigger things on my plate at the time, and I was shipped away from home.
