Staring Down the Barrel: the Rise of Guns in China.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122394012224530655.html

By JAMES T. AREDDY
Shanghai -- China's weapons laws are among the world's toughest. Its blanket ban on private ownership of rifles, pistols and even gun replicas is a core tenet of social policy. Still, a gun culture is taking hold.

China may be freer from gun crime than many nations, and official statistics show overall crime on a continuous down trend. Yet, these days, reports about gun crimes turn up as often as several times a week even in the tightly controlled state-run media. The reports are often brief, without much follow-up as cases progress. Still, the splashy gunfights, murders, gun-factory raids and smuggling busts that get reported contrast with China's zero-tolerance stance on guns, and point to changes in criminals' behavior.

I was told gun crimes in tightly controlled countries, Korea, Japan and China, are on the rise.

the green ammo is actually capable of penetrating the front armour of the m1 Abrams tank and must be banned

I remember back in the early 90's - a gun dealer was trying to sell me - at a premium price - a Chinese Broomhandle made by Shansei in 9mm. One of this selling points was the inscription "Shansei" on the side of the pistol. (Though my memory has it starting with a "T")

A light bulb went off on top of my head and I asked him why the Chinese would write their name in English on their pistol - since it was originally for the Chinese market.

Too bad that light buld failed to go off on a number of my other purchases, but remembering that event always makes me laugh. :)

I remember reading an article about how living in an urban environment essentially turns your brain into mush (or at least, makes you much more irritable and gives you a short fuse). Given China's population density (and assuming that study was accurate), one can only imagine the amount of road rage and "heat-of-the-moment" shootings...

I went to china about fifteen years ago. One of the cities I visited, I was surprised to see a guy that looked pretty poor carrying around a rifle, on that same block some kid was just taking dump in the middle of the street.

I've always hated China's gun laws. It makes it almost impossible for me to spend extended periods of time back in the mainland when I know I can't shoot anywhere nearby.

Just like the article briefly mentioned it's near impossible to get the full facts of how bad the gun crimes are because of the tightly controlled media. One can only wonder.

It's possible to smuggle in handguns into China. One just needs to know the right people and pay the price.

Why would you need to? I'd figure they have plenty of Tok's and other oddball handguns left over floating around. Dunno why you'd need to bring weapons INTO China. They should have millions of SKS's, AK's, etc.

Are you sure you didn't just go to Santa Cruz?

8 years ago when I went back I saw a kid taking a dump on a newspaper near a sidewalk. In summer 2007, while going through one of China's underground crosswalks I saw a homeless man about to take a dump on a newspaper before he was stopped by police. Then later in my vacation I was going through Beijing's shopping district when I only saw one little girl peeing on the sidewalk.

I don't see the big deal about people defecating/urinating in public.

Happens in Europe (thinking of France) and in the city I live in all the time.

I once complained about a homeless man who stunk up the area where he sat and the police told me that they could arrest him for indecent exposure if he crapped in public, but if he crapped in his pants they could do nothing.

A lack of accessible public toilets probably exists in every part of the world.

Could be Grandpa's souviner of the Long March.

And maybe he was the 3rd or 4th one to acquire down the Long March, as the 2nd and 3rd comrades in front of him fell off.

Why waste a precious asset, gun, when they had plenty of people?
