Dont apologize. Whats wrong with saying shotty? Anyone who tells you not to needs to loosen their belt.

Got the G26 for 300$ with Trijicon N/S and my G21 500$ even with 3 mags and ghost ring night sights factory installed. I think it was a LEO return, the tag said used but the gun was brand new. The mags were never used

If 500 is your budget and you only need one, get a Remington 870 and ammo. Practice with it, keep the rest for HD or SHTF.

did you guys seriously not say a 10/22 yet? if you don't have a .22lr, then you don't have a collection...

See my sig line. ;)

There are lots of great guns to be had under $500. Bring that ceiling down to $300 or even $200 and you've got a challenge.

Got a Mossy 590 for $200, a Star Firestar Plus (9mm that can use my old S&W mags) for $250, a High Standard Model "B" for $200, and a Remy 1148 for $250.

The Mossy was a great deal, the Firestar, Model "B", and the 1148 were fairly standard prices, but great values for what you get.

Mossberg 500 combo 12GA (18" barrel + 26" barrel) goes on sale at Big 5 for 220.00.

I brought it to a shotgun course and performed right next to the 800.00 shotguns and still did well at most anything < 25 yards.

S&W M&P goes on sale for ~400.00. I paid 425.00 for mine chambered in .40S&W. I think the Springfield XDs also go on sale like that as well.

These were all pre-Obama gun sales so things might be a little different right now!

If by "good" you mean accurate, the best accuracy-for-your-buck rifle would be a Schmidt-Rubin K31 (Swiss military bolt-action rifle). They can be had for $200-$250 and will shoot MOA groups easily with surplus Swiss ammo (GP11).

Browning BuckMark rifle 2x the rifle of 10/22 imo the BuckMark comes accurate and dependable as is don't need hundreds of dollars of tuning like the 10/22 but hey they opened a can of worms with the OP

But you are paying around $500 for the buckmark and $200 for the 10/22. I have spent maybe $60 on parts to upgrade the trigger group on my 10/2 and it shoots great.

My girlfriend's uncle has one of those buckmark rifles and it is nice. They are pretty hard to find in my area. I have only seen a couple. I think Sportsman's Warehouse had them awhile back.

Simple...

Glock 17
Rem 870

(PS - I'd take an old 870 Wingmaster over any of the new crud they're selling now, too :D )

The best deals, in terms of bang for your buck are, in my opinion:

RIA 1911 $400-430 in .45 and .38 super
Mossberg 500 12 ga. combination deal with a 28" and 18" barrel $240-290
Stevens Model 200 in any of the major hunting calibers $300

For under $1000, you have a hunting and self defense battery. Add a .22, and you have enough guns to deal with anything short of invading armies of zombies. Of those guns, it is a toss up between the RIA and the Stevens for which one is the most under-rated gun out there. They are both a HUGE value for the price, and compare favorably with guns that cost 2x as much.

As a student, I'm a gun guy on a budget and haven't paid over $400 yet for a single gun since I started buying a couple of years ago. Here's what I've got so far, and I would recommend all of them:

Ruger Mark II 22/45 Target .22lr
Ruger Blackhawk .357 mag
Yugo SKS 7.62 X 39
Taurus 85 .38 spl
Mosin-Nagant M44 7.62 X 54R
Marlin XL7 .270 Win

Next on the agenda is a 10/22, so again it will cost below $400 (at least before I start Bubba'in it up!).
