View Full Version : $900 to spend on a 1911 - Recommend one

Ok, so I've handled about 20 different models.

A couple of thoughts before making a recommendation.

1) No brazil made Springfields please

2) Internal Extractor

3) Ambi safety

4) Front and rear cocking serrations

EDIT:

5) Caliber needs to start with a 4 and end with a 5

This will not be a race gun. I want it to function 100% in stock form.

TIA!

Dan Wesson is around your price range with a lot of praise.

Kimber custom II? Half a TRP? I believe the Springfield Operators are made stateside.

The operators are 51% stateside as per another thread where someone posted a response from a Springfield rep. They get the slide and frame from brazil then assemble it all here as far as i know.

Kimber Gold Match, ambi-safety. Lighter than stock triggers in the Kimber line. Ambi Safety and oversized hand-fit barrel from the custom shop. Might be able to find a deal on them around your budget.

no "quality" 1911's that are US made around that price range except for Dan Wessons...which are a little over a grand usually, brand new. However, good looking trying to find some...Your best bet is a springfield loaded...why "no brazil made" ?

If you change your mind and want one with an external extractor:
Go Smith & Wesson:

I got this one almost a month ago.

I would go with a Springfield but you mentioned something about Brazil. Although, if you find an Operator, that is a great steal.

Dan Wesson and Kimber is the only thing that pops into my head for $900. The only issue is Kimber has been hit or miss lately with QC.

Save another 100 bucks and buy a Sig 1911, seen a few for under a grand. Or you could buy a regular sig220 if you want the .45 and never look back.

Those are 2 options I will never consider...

Thanks for your input on a good 1911

I think everyone should own a 1911 and P220 :)

I think everyone should one at least one 45, but in my house there are no SIG's at all.

Not my cup of tea.

Corbin Dallas,
Guess you're not a big fan.
You should really shoot one though.
Great feel in the hand and shoots great out of the box.

Good luck in your search for a 1911.

Sorry to hear that, but maybe you need to reconsider.

You are assuming I have not shot one.

Build a bridge and lets all get over it.

Bottom line, sigs do not fit my criteria. End of story.

Plus one with this. I was an "internal extractor only" guy until I shot a S&W 1911. Even my gunsmith (a Colt 1911 specialist, who collects Colt 1911's )(lot and lots of 1911's) admits that S&W got it right! c good

To bad you don't want a Brazil made Springfield as the Mil-Spec is very good. I have a Stainelss Steel one.

Take a look at Dan Wesson CBOBs if you like commander sized 1911's or Pointman 7 for the traditional 5 inchers. They are just a hair over 900 if you look. I have a CBOB and love it.

The Brazil thing bugs me a little too, but the sole 1911 I have in the safe these days is a Springfield, never had any problems with it.

If its any consolation Springfield is a great company with great American CS we expect in this hobby/ community.

I've been reading up on what I can about Dan Wesson's 1911's. So far, I like what I've seen and it seems that the DW Pointman 7 is right on par for my needs.

Now to fondle one... or 2

Put that $900 in a savings account and keep adding to it until you have about $1350 and go get a nice Kimber. OR, keep adding to it until you can afford a Wilson, Ed Brown, Les Baer, Nighthawk, etc. By being patient and frugal you could end up with a really nice gun rather than a budget gun.

Actually, a FN IOM came up for sale and I'm in the process of acquiring it. If all works out, I'll have an IOM for the collection. If not, back to searching for a 1911.

BTW, it would take a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time to get to 1350 from 900 in a savings account. At 2% per year interest rate (WHICH is REALLY GOOD) it would take just over 20 years compounded.

I'm not sure I want to wait 20 years for $450.

5) needs to start with a 4 and end with a 5

What about a .475 Wildey Magnum.... Begins with a 4 ends with a 5, doubles as Anti Air... Probably not in the budget though.

I think you are on the edge, with the $900 you can get better then average Gi 1911 but you are about $300 to $400 away from the good ones.
