Over the past 40 years, how are they typically passed? Long drawn out with back and forth or have there been cases of late-night sessions that are snuck in? Just curious about all of these bill being passed and lobbied right now, if legislation/bans could be snuck into law with no press or coverage?

Kind of a combination. There is usually a fight, and it may take more than session for a major bill to pass. Things can be snuck into a bill, though. Look up the Hughes Amendment.
ETA: I remember the press keeping quiet during critical phases, so as to keep gunowners in the dark.
