Am I weird for thinking this is awesome:

The U.S. Coast Guard is deploying armed helicopters to head off a possible terrorist raid on Bay Area waters. (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/02/03/BA5L15LTT1.DTL)

Best line in the article:
The helicopters have been equipped with 7.62mm machine guns and what Creech called "a precision firing rifle." The machine guns, said Creech, "would kill everybody " on the boat being attacked from the air. The rifle is for "selective" targets.

Outstanding.

About time. The Guard should have whatever tools they need to effectively "guard."

How are they going to hoist people in with a weapon in the doorway?

Makes me wish I'd followed dad into the Coasties; he retired Master Chief Petty Officer. Growing up I always thought they were kind of square.
That was before I knew about the way cool helos and stuff. Oh well.

They were up down the Linda Mar bay in Pacifica all day Sunday; low and fast. Guess that was part of this.
Wonder what MG they have on board? Can anyone tell from the picture or do we have any coasties on board that would know?

It's a NERF from Kmart.

The ammo can looks like a .30 caliber can. So it's mostly like the M60 since weight is not a problem. Plus M249 SAW doesn't have the reach of the .30 cal.

60 gun, huh?
I'd have thought they might be running M240s.

My good friend is in the Coast Guard, stationed in San Francisco I believe. I gotta ask him about the guns!

It is an M240.

It's nothing new. The MH-68A Stingray helos have had M240's since their introduction. They were purchased specifically for interdiction of drug-runners in the Gulf. However, all eight are stationed in Florida.

The Coast Guard has been upgrading their Dolphins to the "C" model and have given it a multi-mission capability. The same aircraft can be used for SAR or Helicopter Interdiction Tactical Squadron (HITRON) missions. This allows them to better serve in their Homeland Security mission of providing port security while the HH-60 Jayhawk takes over the USCG's primary SAR helo.

We took a cruise out of Long Beach in 2007 - Coast Guard came by in a small boat with a machine gun on the bow and saw us off on our trip to Mehhiko.

'Bout time their helos had the same.

The machine gun in this picture appears to have a BFA attached. I guess the photo was taken during a training exercise?

I've seen video of them using .50BMG bolt action rifles in the helo to shoot out the engines of the drug runner speed boats.

The point is, they won't have to. Saves on fuel costs. They are taking Obama's plea to Americans to save energy to heart.

Always wanted to join the CG. I should have joined right out of highschool as there is no way I could afford the low pay now.

What about the Mini Gatlin Gun? So much better

EDIT... I wonder how they would find the partially submerged boats? Sonar Nets? Heat Signature?
