View Full Version : New Ruger 10/22 & scope question

02-01-2009, 9:02 PM
Picked up my first Ruger 10/22 today. It is the target version with the bull barrel and a brown laminate stock. Now I just need to decide on a scope for it and have some fun. Anyone have any suggestions as to a decent scope to use?

Pardon the mess on my reloading/work bench.

People seem to like the mueller apv scope. Pretty inexpensive with great glass. Think there are some recently posted for sale on here.

I have the same rifle, congrats on the purchase and you will have alot of fun with this model! I have a plain jane TASCO scope on mine that is 3-16 power and it does absolutely fine and cost me about 50 dollars.

Congrats on the new "T" model - very nice!
For a scope, the Mueller APV is a good choice for overall use in the ~$120 price range, or the Simmons Whitetail Classic when on sale at Midwayusa.com for $110 (more magnification at 20x maximum, but need high rings and a tall sight base). Burris Signature Zee rings are a great choice that many 10/22 shooters have had good luck with.
If you have a higher budget, the Weaver line of scopes has a great reputation, as does some Leupold scopes.
On a side note, using quality ammo will give you much better groups (Wolf Match Target or SK match ammo) in your barrel. www.rimfirecentral.com has a wealth of info, too, if you haven't already been there.

I hope you enjoy your new rifle - it's a beauty! The spiral finish on the hammer-forged barrel is very unique and I find it aesthetically pleasing. If you want a better trigger pull, a new hammer does wonders. And the automatic bolt release and extended magazine release are other inexpensive enhancements that really make a huge difference!

Ah, I see you already have an extended magazine release, so a new one is not needed.

Also, a new sight base (not the one included with the rifle) would be a good choice.

Nikon 3-9 with a BDC is my choice - easy to keep on target at distance with the BDC - to my way of thinking, anything more than a 3-9 on a 22 is overkill.

wow, you guys rock. a lot of advice in just a few minutes.
I have a Leupold Mk4 M1 10x on my big rifle, other than that, I have no real scope knowledge.

So, with that said, any suggestions on a Leupold scope? I would like to buy a scope once and not worry about it failing.

The sight base, is there a particular brand I should look at?

The other items you spoke of 1022rimfire, are those the Volquartsen items? I have visited there webpage a bit, droooled a lot. They seem to have some serious stuff to create some monster 10/22s. I did see the trigger guard setup, TG2000. Is this something that is necessary?

thanks for the help and insight guys.

i have a cheap Simmons on my 10/22 setup.

any scope should work fine.

that bull barrel should guarantee U .5 MOA @ 50yds and 1in @ 100yd.

Get whatever glass you can afford. Would You mind getting a red dot? If not then get a Vortex Strikefire. Works wonders on my AK-74

I have a bushnell elite 3200 in 3x9x40 on my 10/22t and have shot sub moa at 100 yds with certain ammo and no wind.factory scope mount and cheap rings plan on updating those soon.

I like the BSA Sweet 22 scopes. Large target knobs make great for adj for differant ranges. I have 3 of them and they return to zero for me. Differant ammo can change POI but if you use one brand no problems.

I have the mueller APV on burris zee rings with the Pos-align inserts. Great combo, awesome glass, gets you out to 100 or even 150 yds. You really don't need anymore than that.

well, ordered some stuff for my new 10/22T. Volquartsen recoil bolt buffer, Volquartsen Picatinny Receiver rail and I think ive decided on a scope. A Leupold VX-III 6.5-20x40. I'm sure this is overkill, but it should make life fun. Only question I have is about the rings. Would the Nova rings from Volquartsen be high enough? Anyone have any experience with those? Probably going to order the scope & rings next month.

You can't put a cheap scope on an accurate rifle. Leupold Vari-X II 4-12 or 6-18x with ADJUSTABLE OBJECTIVE (this is important because 22s are often shot closer than 100 yards and "big scopes" are not parallax free at that distance unless they have AO)

Check Ebay for steals since these scopes are not "tactical" they are not in high demand.
