Nice rifles. I would have only recognized the middle one as a 1903 from the cocking piece. Any history on their conversion to sporters?

Outstanding collection there!:thumbsup: Does the rifle at the bottom in the photo have the Garand speed lock?

Yes, it has the speedlock. I don't know what it was called. I understand the cocking knob was removed from the standard '03 striker to reduce its weight and speed the lock time. The safety is also reversed from the standard 03 so that it does not hit the shooter in the nose when firing prone. I have no idea how some rifles came to have these mods. Any ideas out there?

These are not 'converted' sporters. There were a few less than 6,000 of these originally built as sporters by Springfield Arsenal.

John C. Garand of M1 rifle fame had a patent for the speedlock mechanism that was popular amongst '03 shooters during the 1930s. The cocking piece was of course not included in this mechanism, and a different style mainspring was used to help reduce lock time in the '03. These were not installed onto any military issue rifles but many were found on the various target or match grade '03 rifles that were popular at the time.

Lovely rifles. I alway have wanted an M2. Never have run across one available at what I thought at the time to be a reasonable price. The Springfield Sporters I heard of in an old Al Miller article in Rifle. Even 20 years ago he had concluded it was too valuable to risk shooting with hot loads, and stuck to cast bullet loads.
