Like the title says does anyone here have the new Magpul MOE handguards? I am thinking about picking one up for my mid-length once they finally release them. I think the carbine length is selling for $39 which doesn't seem too bad.

If you can post some pictures and the pros and cons it would be great.

You can preorder them at riflegear. I ordered a set of the fde, hopefully it doesn't take magpul too long to start shipping them out.

I called Magpul and ordered them over the phone. Arrived at my door 5 days later. For the price they are a good option.

I hope they come out with a mid-length version. It's a nice option for a pretty basic handguard.

They are coming out with one. But I do not know when it will be released.

Bump for an old dead thread because I know the middy MOE hand guards are finally out in the 2010 Magpul catalog and I want to know if anyone has them yet. I want.

They aren't coming out until sometime in the summer, which is really putting a damper on my plans for a middy upper. :(

You can find pictures of the Mid and Rifle length MOE's and I think both are ugly. I think the carbine looks nice though.

That's right! WTF  Did they redesign the MOE handguard line?

I talked to Magpul yesterday and they confirmed summer '10 for the release of the middy handguards. I can't wait to slap them on my mid upper!

I've got three sets of the carbine length ones and love them. For those looking for carbine length sets, Palmetto State and DSG Arms have them in stock.

FYI, Palmetto has the MOE set (HG's, grip and milspec buttstock) for $79. DSG has the same set but also includes the buffer, buffer ext tube, spring, locknut and plate for $99 with free shipping. Just ordered another set from DSG. That is a smokin deal!!

From my understanding, they increased the top height of the entire line of MOE handguards to be compatible with piston kits. Thats probably why the carbine shows Summer '10.. its the new version..

That sucks. I wanted to use a set of MOE handguards with a C-More scout setup, and from what I've heard the MOE hangaurds are already larger up top than most other handguards. I guess I'll need to go get the lower MOE handguards ASAP for that setup.

C-Mores are pretty old tech now... just sayin.

Slowjonn,
Do you have a link for both Palmetto and DSG? I looked on their sites, and didn't see any "sets" like this for sale.

Also, how hard is it to replace the stock and the handguard? (I bought my lower used so it was already assembled and the upper came build as well.)

Thanks

It's actually going to be for the wife. I wanted to get one optic on her rifle AND her handgun to keep things simple. The handgun is forcing me to think light and small. Main choices were between the C-more or other reflex sight and the Dr Optic. I was HEAVILY leaning towards the Dr Optic and an Aimpoint Micro for the rifle but I really like the idea of having on optic platform for her to get familiar with first before complicating things.

Oh yeah, she really liked the Aimpoint M2, but had trouble seeing the 2 MOA dot so I wanted to get something with a larger dot.

The handguards are pretty simple, no special tools needed. Same with the stock. Shouldn't take more than 10 minutes to swap both stock and handguards. Just make sure you have the correct extension tube(commercial or milspec) for the stock you buy. The sets for sale above are both milspec stocks. So if you have the commercial tube now, you will need to buy a milspec for these stocks to work.

Thanks for the link and info.

Next question, how do I tell which tube I have? I was on the magpul.com site and there's a link that tells you how to differentiate between commercial and milspec, but the link goes nowhere (links to here: http://www.magpul.com/tech/ctr.html )

Thanks!

Thanks for the link!

It looks like I have the commercial tube (based on the angle cut of the tube -- I don't have anything at home precise enough to measure the diameter of the tube). I can get the setup from DSG Arms, but it would seem I need to get a wrench to get the nut off/on the tube as well.

And an even dumber question. I have a 16" bushmaster upper. How do I know the handguards that Magpul currently sells are the correct size? Since there is talk about longer and shorter ones?

Thanks!

If your tube has an angle cut at the back, you have a commercial tube. Just get the kit from DSG, its a great value. If you own an AR, you really should have an armorers wrench, but I have used other tools to get the nut off. The carbine handguards will fit your Bushy. The other lengths that were mentioned earlier in this thread were for the mid lengh and rifle length uppers.

If your close to me, I have an armorers wrench you can use.

Some commercial tubes have flat backs. The only REAL way to know if you have a commercial tube vs. a Mil-spec tube is the diameter. Commercial tubes are larger. Just off the top of my head, Mil-spec tubes are something like 1.130 +/- .010" and commercial tubes are 1.170 +/- .010". Again, that's just off the top of my head and it might be off a little.

That is correct. I was only going off of what yoda said about his tube having an angle cut in back. I have never seen a milspec tube with an angle cut, only commercial. So my thinking was if his has an angle cut, its a commercial tube.

Does anyone have the older MOE handguards with an AFG? How did you do it?
