.. in desperate need of a clean up. A Saturday morning would be better than a Sunday as it seems a lot more people go there on Sundays. This is in Rosamond just off the 14 Freeway.

Well it was me and ZRX61 out there today. We cleaned up a good sized area, raked up a whole lot of shotgun shell casings into piles.

Then we shot a little. We put a 1/4" steel plate about 10" x 16" about 165 feet out.

We shot 5 rounds a piece at it with one of his Mosin's. Punched 9 holes in the plate.

I then shot a 8 round magazine of 9mm from my Hi-Point C9. Made 6 dents, maybe 7 out of 8 shots. Pretty good for a pistol at over 50 yards.

I shot off about 50 rounds in the 9mm, but we spent the most time talking and cleaning up the area.

On that note, how about after it rains? We're going shooting somewhere this weekend, just haven't figured out where. Looks like you'd get o the 14 at Rosamond ave., then take the frontage road north along the 14, hang a let and you're there. If I could take the 2wd Benz instead of having to slam the suspension back together on the Rover that would make life way easier.

Haven't driven out there in the rain, but I live on a road not much different. Avoid the standing puddles. They tend to get real soft in the middle and might swallow a tire real deep. If you are in a truck it shouldn't be a problem.

Which one of you missed with a rifle at 55yds?

Probably me. I have always preferred, and been a better shot with, handguns.

I kind of like the Sam Elliot character in "We Were Soliders". He had his 1911 on his side and Mel Gibson's character said something like "You might want to grab an M-16." He pulled out his handgun and responded, "When I have the need for one of those, there will be plenty of them lying around on the ground!"

ZRX61
02-19-2009, 5:48 PM
Might have been me, the front sight falls into my "fuzzy vision" range.. & if I wear the glasses so I can see the front sight.... I can't see the target...
So I line up the rear site.. with the fuzzy thing at the other end of the gun.. & the target...
Altho it seems to be a Mosin thing. I can hit 12in plates at 400yards with my Enfields with no problem. Slight dif in barrel length moves the front sight into the *sharp, no longer fuzzy* range.

Hey people. Is this a legal shooting area? I live in SCV and my friend and I have been looking for an open area to shoot, and scour the place for re-usable brass. Plus we both have trucks and know how to use rakes. I just don't want to go somewhere thinking its legal to shoot and end up getting popped for weapon charges, my buddy's taking the bar exam and can't have a record and I'm a commercial driver and would lose my job if I get a serious enough charge. Thanks for your help.

AFAIK it's privately owned land, & the owner drives a grader thru there about every 5 years to scrap all the crap up.

Decoligny
09-21-2009, 11:40 AM
It is private property. The local Sheriff Deputies are fully aware of the area and that it is used for shooting. The owner apparently has no problem with it being used as a range. It is however in our best interest to clean up after ourselves, as if it get TOO messed up, the owner might become less willing to let everyone use the land.

The local Deputies don't shoot there, they shoot at the gravel pit on the right side of Rattlesnake Road. The "Big Iron" mine.

Yes. I was out there last weekend after not shooting out there for a while  I wish Wally-World bulk ammo hulls were worth a nickel apiece, I'd be a millionaire. I brought my two gunny-sacks and after picking up my trash grabbed all I could, but you'd never know I'd attempted to clean anything.

Also, anybody know what the policy is on camping out there? My buddy and I were talking about heading out there late Friday night, camping, shooting in the morning and being back in town by noon to one rather than spending pretty much a whole Saturday going out there. Being private land (or so it seems) figured it may not be kosher.

It seems like most of the trash is within 20 yards of the firing line, shouldn't be too hard to post up at one end and clean out to the piles of crap people shoot with pistols. Or, go clean one of the smaller areas off to the side if nobody's there, doesn't matter what section we clean, we won't get it all, but if we can make a dent then shoot some guns it's worth it.

Is this place still legit to shoot at? What's the latest status on the mess up there?

Heading out there tomorrow with a few friends, as far as I'm aware it's the same as it ever was.

I was out there today & couldn't believe how clean the place looks.. altho thats in relation to how it looked when it was REAL bad. There's a still a slew of casings on the ground (but a LOT less than there was recently) but most of the *targets* have disappeared.. only one shot to hell TV, no boats, only 1 pallet with paper targets stapled to it.
I'd say 90% of the trash/targets have gone & probably 80% of the shells/casings.

I was out there yesterday and some knuckleheads lit the hill on fire and bailed. We stayed and called it in, but I hope that this doesn't get this place shut down. It does need a good rake sometime soon.

Best we could tell they were shooting steel core or some kind of incendiary, one shot and it ingnited. It was too quick for anything else.

Good idea, good job, but way too far north for me. I applaud your efforts however.

Me as well. Great job thanks for picking up that junk.
