I got just about 5 months until I hit 21 years old but I have been planning my first actual handgun purchase for years now. I figure I have all the time in the world after my b-day but what better way is there to celebrate your 21st than buying a handgun.. other than getting hammered of course.

Heres my pick:

SPRINGFIELD ARMORY GI OD GREEN 1911 .45 ACP
http://forum.pafoa.org/imagehosting/22994694f0d57dc2d.jpg

I've always been a fan of 1911's and she really caught my eye awhile back. Hell, I already bought a new pair of grips for her when I was 19.

So whats your pick???

I'll be 21 in may but I already have my 1911, a Kimber Royal II. on my birthday I just have to send in the transfer paperwork into my name. Pretty much you can't beat a 1911. but you may want to look into getting a beaver tail because when I shot a WW2 1911 that didn't have one my hand got a little roughed up...no biggie but just a suggestion

When i turn 21 i am gonna buy a Colt 1911, which will be the weapon i pass down and take care of the most.

Either a Colt Gold Cup National Match
Or just a Regular Government model 70 series.

I have a 1911 in .38 Super, but that is not something i would want to pass down. Just a nice original Colt 1911....

My advice on that pistol... save your pennies and go for the next model up. My sister got the Gi in stainless, but had to replace the sights so you can actually shoot well with it. I'm going to buy it from her when I turn 21, but just a heads up I couldn't shoot for crap with those gi sights.

I am 21 and on my birthday I bought a Springfield XD. I turned 21 last April and that winter was a very rough one for me so I didn't have the money I wanted but I am very happy with my XD. Shortly after that I bought all of my reloading stuff. That cost more then the pistol. Now I reload for all of my 9mm, 308, and .223. I definitely recommend reloading. I can reload 1000 of 9mm for under $100 if I use my own brass.

My parents told me they would take me to Vegas for my 21st but I told them I had to be here to buy my handgun on my birthday. That is beside that fact that I don't drink so Vegas wouldn't be that fun unless it was to go out in the desert to shoot stuff.

I still have about 42 months to go, but i've already decided on a desert eagle, just for the cool factor.

I bought my P226 on my birthday...awesome purchase! I couldn't go drink because I had eye surgery two days before and I was still on Vicodin.

If you need a second proof of residence, you might try voter materials. Two stores I've been to have said they would accept voter registration or a sample ballot addressed to you at your DL address.

ya i have 4 weeks and 6 days... so painfully close..and yet so far.

I wish i could NRF a XDm already, but i guess that will wait. I like the current xd-40's, especially the v10. If i had my way though i would get the Springfield MC operator.....(as if i have $1000+ laying around.... :( ) not that big on HK's for some reason.

It will be from my pops, but I can't do the transfer until I turn 21. You have to be 21 to run the DROS paperwork for a handgun.

Here I am a few years ago while I was in Vegas for a high school baseball tourny. Im shooting a full auto AR chambered in 9mm. I also shot a MP5K but that bastard jammed more times than you can shake a stick at.

I was fortunate enough to move here from the "free" state of Wisconsin. In Wisconsin you can buy a pistol from a private party when you're 18.
You don't even need any paperwork!

I'm turning 21 this September and I'm planning on buying my first revolver. I'm not sure exactly what I'm going to get, but I want a .357. Right now I'm leading towards a S&W686 or Ruger GP-100.

I currently own a Walther P99 in .40 S&W

You never know, but hopefully they still are.

That's the 1st gun I bought as soon as I turned 21 (took me up until then to save up for it). I really wanted the .50DE but it was already banned but you can get the conversion from Magnum Research (it's only a different barrel/magazine).

Some may say that the HSC is stupid and a waste of time but I tink it is completely necessary. Its just a test to see if you contain the knowledge and display enough competence to own, use and care for a handgun. Frankly, IMO, if you fail the test, you have no business with firearms.

HSC is needed if a handgun were to be gifted to someone over 18. I took the HSC at Fort Courage Armory a bit over a year ago. It is ridiculously easy, so easy it seems like the only reason they have it is to weed out those who can't read english. It is so easy I am sure a child can pass it, the DMV test is harder.

Good to see there are others out there my age who don't feel like they need to abuse alcohol. Often I feel like I am the only one.

As Josh said above, it is needed if you were to initiate the OpLaw (http://www.ag.ca.gov/firearms/forms/pdf/oplaw.pdf) process. Those of us who have already taken the HS test, most likely have gained possession of handguns through a death or as a gift from a family member.

I have 9 months to go, till end of November. I'm torn between a 1911 and a Jericho for my first pistol, leaning towards Jericho because every one has a 1911. When I was 18 I bought 1 oz of gold to be my gun saving, I know I'd spend it if it was in a savings account. Bought it when it was $600 now worth $950, probably buy range membership and reloading stuff with whats left over from the gun I'll purchase.

If you have a valid voter registration card, it is acceptable - I used mine to buy my first handgun (posted below :)). Some places might give you grief, but it is a form that is issued by the state containing your full name and address, so by all means it should be accepted. If you're unsure, ask your FFL and they should be able to get a concrete answer for you (although I've had some different experiences, so YMMV).

So its possible to obtain a handgun before you're 21 here? I already own an SKS and a Winchester 1300 Defender, I'd love to add a handgun to round out the long guns. Could someone describe for me the entire process of obtaining a handgun before you're 18? For some reason I didn't think intra-familial transfers were ok even if you were over 18 but under 21. I'm also well aware of the silly HSC. Also I live in Orange County and the only ranges near me are handguns only, so when I shoot I have to drive a ways and having a handgun would be just plain convenient. Does anyone who owns a handgun and isn't 21 have any trouble at ranges? Where do you guys go?

I believe a PTP intra-family transfer is OK if you're under 18 (has to come from either your mother or father). From what I understand, it is legal to OWN a handgun if you're over 18 and under 21, but it is not possible to BUY a handgun. You can also get your HSC is you're over 18 as well. Let me check the applicable laws and post back.

EDIT: A-ha! Found it: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=124237

(4) 12078(c)(2) also means parents or grandparents can transfer handguns to children or grandchildren 18 or older. Since it's illegal for dealers to transfer handguns to people under 21, this is the way people 18, 19 and 20 can legally receive handguns. (Penal Code 12026 is quite clear that those 18 and over can "own, possess, [and] keep ..." a pistol or revolver.)

So if your parents had a handgun and wanted to transfer it to you (make sure to fill out and submit this form along with the $19 fee: http://www.ag.ca.gov/firearms/forms/pdf/oplaw.pdf), then you'd be good to go. HOWEVER (this is a really stupid one), it is illegal for anyone under 21 to buy pistol ammunition (federal law, not just CA). BUT (even dumber) you can purchase pistol ammo for use in a carbine rifle that uses pistol ammunition (I still can't really get my head around that – you can't buy it for use in a handgun, but you can for use in a rifle that uses that ammo...the ammo is still the same farking thing!). PM me for some ideas.

Well here's my first post..

I'll be 21 august and I'm planning to go through all the trouble of getting a .44 desert eagle, as my first pistol purchase, then buying the 50ae barrel and changing it out. Im a pretty big guy, but this purchase is going to be just for the novelty of it all..hopefully I can find a used one for a pretty good deal on the classifieds.

I have a question though, is there anything you have to go through once you turn 21 in order to began buying pistols? Or is it just showing proof of age and all the other legalities.

Welcome!

Here it is all spelled out on the Bureau of Firearms website:

All firearms purchases and transfers, including private party transactions and sales at gun shows, must be made through a licensed dealer under the Dealer Record of Sale (DROS) process. California imposes a 10-day waiting period before a firearm can be released to a buyer or transferee. A person must be at least 18 years of age to purchase a rifle or shotgun. To buy a handgun, a person must be at least 21 years of age, and either 1) possess an HSC plus successfully complete a safety demonstration with the handgun being purchased or 2) qualify for an HSC exemption.

As part of the DROS process, the buyer must present "clear evidence of identity and age" which is defined as a valid, non-expired California Driver's License or Identification Card issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles. A military identification accompanied by permanent duty station orders indicating a posting in California is also acceptable.

If the buyer is not a U.S. Citizen, then he or she is required to demonstrate that he or she is legally within the United States by providing to the firearms dealer with documentation that contains his/her Alien Registration Number or I-94 Number.

Purchasers of handguns are also required to provide proof of California residency, such as a utility bill, residential lease, property deed, or government-issued identification (other than a drivers license or other DMV-issued identification).

Proof of residency may be tough for people of our age because some of us still live at home and dont pay any bills. I still cant get a absolute answer if the voter registation card works or not either.

Well I got just over 2 months until I hit 21. I have been doing lots of research lately and have fondled plenty of 1911's since my original post. I am still very interested in the Springfield GI but Rock Island 1911's has also caught my eye... well, actually the price has. Everybody that works behind the counter tells me to stay away from RIA 1911's (I figure they just want me to spend more). Oddly enough, everyone that owns a RIA 1911 says nothing but good things about 'em.

I am also toying with the idea of getting a H&K USP 40. I LOVE USP's and it would be great to have another 40 cal to give my XD40 some company. I already have a USP Expert .45 and Glock 21 so the idea of getting another .45 (the 1911) seems kinda foolish.

But, the way I see it, I cant go wrong either way.

I think it is funny how you have to be 21 to be on the receiving end of a PPT or dealer sale of a handgun but you can be 18 years of age or up to engage in armed security. This poster is correct, with his proper certifications/classes, he is legally allowed to carry the firearm in the caliber he qualified with. The issue is having someone to buy handgun ammunition for you;).

Nothing more embarrassing than having my mommy buy ammo for me http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/images/icons/icon11.gif. Of course I can just buy my 9mm ammo for my 9mm AR15. All 18-20 year olds have 9mm rifles, right? ;)

However it is legal, like buying .22LR ammo.. It's for my rifle..What it accually gets shot in.. who knows. It's so dumb... so very very dumb.

Its easy when I just say I need some 9mm ammo for my AR15 with an 9mm Olympic Arms conversion upper. They usually go talk the their supervisor and come back and say "How much do you need?"

first day i turned 21 i went out and bought a gun.

Thats what I would like to do but who knows if I'll be able to find what Im looking for or if I'll even have the cash at the time. I can sell my school textbooks back now and hope I dont waste it on any more needless AR accessories.

Just a tip for you younger than 21 crowd. Make sure you have a proof of residency before your 21st. It sucks when you can't buy a handgun because you don't have the 2nd PoR so you'll just settle to wait an extra month for you C&R FFL to get to you so you can use that as your 2nd PoR :banghead:

Turning 21 in roughly 1 year. Already have my XD45, and HK USP Compact 45, and a variety of 1911's passed down to me from my grandfather.

When I went to my local gun store to drop off a few shotguns to get worked on, I figured I would take the HSC so I can get my handguns xferred into my name...passed the test no problem, was issued my card, and chatted up the owner. Well it came up that i wasnt 21, and he freaked out, and refused to issue it to me. I explained the situation and he called the DOJ...gosh that was a head ache. But its all sorted out, and some education happened in the process :D

That pisses me off

The DOJ's webite states exactly this:

Are there any minimum qualifications/requirements for a person who wants to take the Handgun Safety Certificate (HSC) test?
The only requirements are that the Handgun Safety Certificate (HSC) applicant must be at least 18 years of age and must present clear evidence of identity and age by presenting a California Driver's License or California Department of Motor Vehicles Identification Card.

and if I remember correctly, the HSC study guide states the same

hogester

The really funny part was that he asked for the card back, and my drivers license, thinking he had written it down wrong, but really he wrote everything down 100% correct.

I wanted to walk out with is so I didn't laugh, but man, he was having a freak out.

When I took mine, the girl told me, "You know this doesn't apply to you right?" Lol, I explained it to her and she gave me my card. She just wanted to make sure I didn't waste my 25 bucks!

My guy I could tell was worried about losing his FFL or getting in trouble. He was freaking out. We didnt get through to the DOJ when I was at the store, so he told me he would hold it until he got a call back. He called me right as they were closing and I picked it up the next day.

I wasn't too annoyed, because not too many people know that an 18 year old can legally own a handgun, they just assume since you have to be 21 to buy one, you would have to be 21 to own and get a HSC.

I know, just some people don't know :p

I'm still undecided between a Sig p226 .40sw and a Springfield (1911) Operator. I've always liked the sig, but when I saw the operator I couldn't resist. Checked the DOJ approved handguns list though, and it seems like the operator isn't CA legal :(. Maybe i can find something similar.

Yes, it's true. If your parent or grandparent or spouse is also a California resident then they can transfer a handgun that they own to you if you are at least 18 years of age. You need to have an HSC first, and then send in the Intra-familial/Op-Law form to CalDOJ along with $19 to register the handgun in your name.

Its a bit late for buying a different model instead since I've owned the GI for about 7 months now. My initial plan was to have the GI upgraded... more or less make into a SA Loaded. But as time went on, I just convinced myself to buy a Loaded. Thats the plan now, but I dont suspect I'll get to that in awhile. I've got other expen$ive things on my plate.
