What do you mean by dummy barrel, the gun shoots i hope.

dummy barrel as in a solid, display barrel that makes that semi-auto look like its full-auto sibling. If that barrel was functionable, it would be a Short Barreled Rifle and in violation of state and federal law if not properly registered.

There would be an 18" barrel that he would swap with the dummy barrel so that it could be shot

All mine shoot. The 2 with foregrips have locked in 10/32 and 10/25 magazines. The Action Arms pistol and Model A Carbine are reg'd AWs.

Or a 16" bbl. My model B had a 16" with the IMI wooden stock. Sometimes I wish I'd kept it. I'm currently assembling a GI receiver for a dedicated .22LR carbine. That'll get the wooden stock and 16" barrel.

actually, since you have the folding stock, IIRC, you need the 18" barrel to make length. They made the 18" barrel for us CA and MI residents. Everyone else got to use a 16" barrel.

Funny thing about that minimum length thing. CA must have changed their process for measuring OAL, cause both my carbines came with 16 bbls (purchased 1984-5).
Here's how my model A looked originally... Action Arms case and everything;
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i202/tonelar/guns/Uzicase1.jpg

Then I was talking to a friend and he mentioned they were now requiring everything with stocks collapsed to make at least 26".
I resisted the first 18" bbls cause they were just 16" ones with extensions welded to them.
The model B got a wood stock while the model A (which I shot more) go a plastic stock. Years later I found 18" .45 and 9mm bbls so I returned the model A's folder.

I dunno if an IMI is within your price range,
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i202/tonelar/guns/UZI9.jpg
but for a G.I. carbine, SC prices are 40-50% less than here.
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i202/tonelar/guns/22LRGIBuild.jpg
You'll find one... just wait til this feeding frenzy is over. Then swoop in on a Vector when the prices drop below $1000 again.

I do prefer the AR-15 9mm carbine over most carbines. Even over a R.A.W. HK94. Ergonomics, the sight options, and the quick mag changes are just hard to beat (AR-15 9mm).

The quick barrel & caliber change, and how small it folds up is a plus for the UZI.

Why would you have locked mags on an UZI?

ke6guj

Why would you have locked mags on an UZI?

because it is arguable that the forward plastic grips/shrouds could be considered an evil feature on a detachable-mag'ed handgun.

12276.1. (a) Notwithstanding Section 12276, "assault weapon" shall also mean any of the following:
(4) A semiautomatic pistol that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and any one of the following:
(A) A threaded barrel, capable of accepting a flash suppressor, forward handgrip, or silencer.
(B) A second handgrip.
(C) A shroud that is attached to, or partially or completely encircles, the barrel that allows the bearer to fire the weapon without burning his or her hand, except a slide that encloses the barrel.
(D) The capacity to accept a detachable magazine at some location outside of the pistol grip.
(5) A semiautomatic pistol with a fixed magazine that has the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds. So, by fixing the mag, any questions about B or C are moot.

Here's an old pic of mine. I really miss it. I hope to buy a mini pistol someday.:)
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n32/qbertquartz2/vectorarms.jpg
It was one of the early special order CA vectors. It has a izzy lower, welded stock, the mag button was welded by the request of my FFL at the time. It could have retained the regular button if it was a 22lr build. A bb for it would be a good invention.:)

Are these new? Seems to me those could potentially make AW's out of peoples featureless builds as well.

nope, not new, been there since 2000, IIRC. Note that that is a limitation on handguns, not rifles. A rifle build with a 16+" barrel would not be subject to those limitations.

After shooting a full size Uzi full auto and a full auto MP5 side by side, I thought the Uzi was junk. Of course you need to consider that the MP5 has that affect on most everything. :)

The other reason for the maglocks were to bring the Uzi pistols into CA legally with single shot magazines. This let us get by the Roster.

Others have chimed in that the handguards are not 2nd handgrips after all, so the pistols don't need their mags locked. Importing a carbine though... you'd lock them to 10 round mags or use a fin to keep the shooter from wrapping their thumb around the back of the pistol grip (like a MMG type setup).
