View Full Version : Angeles -- Too Crowded Lately

I've only been going to Angeles for about 6 months now, but anyone else notice that the place is like Disneyland now? Lots of lines, lots of people, no room.

I love the place, but I just don't get where all these other people came from. I was used to getting in there on the weekend and only feeling the crowd from about 11:30-2 -- otherwise, it was pretty tolerable.

Anyone know what prompted this sudden burst in attendance there lately?

Tony.

bunch of pre-Obama folks shooting a gun for the first time.

Friggin annoying, they're cramping my style, and emptying the Walmarts of cheap ammo

I usually show up around noon on the weekends, a lot of people but no waiting for a spot. Everyone has been nice, even when they get hit in the face from 7 benches down by the random casing that does not get stopped by the brass screens:)

I really try to get there early in the mornings to beat the crowds. Speaking of those brass screens, i'm a left handed shooter, and using those screens on the bench doesn't leave any space to shoot comfortably. Any lefties have a suggestion?

yeah, no handgun ammo at any of the walmart stores I ususally go to which is really odd.

Don't worry, they will make their 3rd trip to the range, get bored, then store that new gun in the closet for the next 20 years.

I just went to shoot there a few weeks ago and I was very angry at the ****ing RSO's. They were more ****ing worried about sweeping up brass than trying to pay attention at the shooters. I observed numerous safety violations while these punks (RSO's) were too busy sweeping up the brass and putting it on the yellow buckets, even my ****ing brass, I later learned that once it goes into the yellow buckets, it belongs to the range. Mother****ers.... Sorry about the rant, I needed to get this off of my chest.. LOL.

I know, I know. Not sure if the guys sweeping up the brass were there just to do that or they were the actual RSO's. But like the OP said, it was freaking packed that day.

Lol, true enough -- but at least I'm sticking with it, and not doing the "3 range trips and I'm bored" thing. I do try to stay out of the way though, and watch my brass.

We should be glad to see new shooters joining our ranks, but I would like to see night shooting at Angeles Range on more days, rather than just Wed nights. The same thing happened to the Burro Canyon Shooting Range when The San Gabriel Valley Gun Club closed down.

I was there Friday afternoon. About 7 people on the pistol/rifle side when I got there-3 or 4 when I left.:32:

It's the weekend, what do you expect, go on a weekday if you want to avoid all the hassle

Wednesday nights it does get busy, but it sure is fun.

In regards to the "USN-Chief" statements about range/brass wenches

I usually install a brass deflector square (large 2x2 metal screen) because many of the people just annoy me, I do that so I can collect my own brass because I was fed up of people lingering behind me and literally picking up my brass after I fired it. I do not reload, I just collect the used brass, place it in a bag, and throw it in my trash, throwing money away-perhaps, but I do not give a damn- I would rather throw it in the trash then have some brass vulture lingering behind me- damn bums.

I WAS THERE ON FRIDAY TOO, AND IT SEEMED PRETTY MELLOW, I DIDN'T HAVE ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE WORKERS TAKING MY BRASS, BUT MAYBE THEY ARE JUST HURTING FOR MONEY, I MEAN ITS 12 BUCKS TO SHOOT ALL DAY.

I was there this last saturday. Got there at 0840 and left at 1630.

Got told by the RO that we couldn't shoot ammo with steel casings. I thought it was just steel core projectiles.

I've already noticed lines for the clay target throwing machines. I'm not surprised by the increased attendance of the rest of the range.

Maybe this would be a good time for you and other interested parties to get the San Gabriel Valley Gun Club re-opened. It was closed down due to city politics/BS.

I had to show them the bullet wouldn't stick to a magnet and they leave me alone now, it helps if you just trash the steel rather than putting it in the brass bucket. I guess they don't have a magnet sorter.

The problem isn't the number of people shooting, but the number of ranges / lanes.

I’ve been going to Angeles for the past year. November and December were pretty busy with my last couple trims in late December and January not being too crowded. I usually get there early 9:00 then shoot till around Noon by which time it starts to fill up. My only pieve is that I wish they would number the lanes at 100yd, as people are constantly putting their targets in the wrong spots and overlapping fire. Overall, I'm very happy with Angeles; I can shoot my surplus rifles, be in the mountains, have a good hotdog, and buy some reloading stuff if need be. Wish the old timers from Guns & Ammo were still around...

I like the people at Angeles. Always friendly and helpful.

I try to go durring the week to avoid crowds. Weekends get busy. I go on Saturday's and usually stay from about 10:00am-1:00pm.

a lot of people are sighting in their rifles and function checking them....

there is a general pessimism about the relatively near future and thoughts of bad stuff on the horizon.

You can make money off that in the for sale section on here. If you throw it away it just ends up in a landfill.

I stopped by there yesterday afternoon just to say "hi" to the 50 shooters. I didn't shoot. So, I filled out my release of liability, turned it in and went to the rifle side. As I crossed the redline, some moron picks up a rifle, with a closed action, from the back bench and sweeps me and two ROs on his way to the line! The ROs didn't see it, they were busy with someone else, and I wanted to pretend that it didn't happen so, I let it go. I hate looking like an ******* all the time.

Well, I guess I got there too late for most of the 50 shooters. The only ones still there were Butthead and Mrkobota. While I was talking to them, I did politely correct someone who was carrying a 91/30 to the line with a closed action and later stopped them from shooting because the cleaning rod had come loose. Both times, they thanked me for quietly correcting and watching out for them. I didn't mind helping them out. It was the first guy, the one who swept me, that I wanted to ream good! Also, yes, it was crowded when I got there but, there were some open benches.

There should be a system in place that flags "new shooters" at these public ranges. Maybe make a mandatory 10-15 minute briefing for these new guys at say 24$ including the range fee. Before I take anyone to the range I get very serious, some people that have known me for awhile even get a little scared, and I explain the power of firearms and give them the 4 rules as well as the range rules.

It's easy to spot a newbie but overall everyone shows respect to the other shooters and there are never any issues. The older RO who usually hangs out on the far right side of the pistol/rifle line is fun to shoot the crap with, and I have shown some shooters the light of the AR-15 California legal configuration, even some older guys! No Idea what I would do without Angeles, the rifle range feels like home.

I shoot less than 20 miles as the crow flies from Angeles and there are so few people there I generally have to keep my eye out for wildlife wandering up on me while shooting. I got the snot scared out of me by a large bobcat sitting about twenty feet behind me the other day. I rarely see others at this range.

Weekends can be tough. I avoid ranges, malls and movie theaters on weekends. Good to see Angeles doing well though. Good people.

On the weekends, if you are there within the first 1/2 hour of opening, you will have no problem getting a bench. It will be crowded an hour or two after opening. I think the ROs do a great job. I pick up my brass after the cease fire as soon as the range goes hot. I reload my brass and have not yet had an RO sweep it up. If I saw anyone picking up my brass, I would let them know that I plan on reloading it. I always shoot from position (prone, sitting, or standing) and either the bench keeps the brass nearby, or when I shoot standing I use a case deflector or a screen.

On a few occasions when it has been crowded, I have even heard the RO ask a shooter that is setting up near me to move their target frame if they had inadvertently placed it in front of mine, or if it looked as if they would be cross shooting into my target.

I would have tamed it and taught it to pickup my brass.
