my dad has a .45 he was thinking about selling and a buddy of mine wants to buy it, my dad seems to think that since hes 20 he cant sell him the gun through a FTF transfer, but i was under the impression that you cant purchase a gun from a dealer unless your 21 but you can purchase one private party as long as your 18, am i right or is he right any help is appreciated
The buyer has to be 21.
Your Dad can give it to you if you are 18 and have a HSC but your buddy needs to be 21 and have an HSC to buy it.

The detail missing here is that a dealer cannot deliver a handgun to someone not 21 - federal and state law - and a CA Private Party Transfer uses a dealer as kind of an escrow agent. Even though the seller is the private party, the dealer has to do all the Dealer Things.
But a father-son handgun transfer to 18+ in CA does not need the dealer, so that's why it works.

never let a gun leave the family, at some point it will be regretted.
