If you find a pistol, turn it in to the police (so you don't get in trouble with having a stolen weapon, etc.), is there any way that you can claim it back?

You mean sort of the way you would get it back if say it was cash that you found?

Probably not in CA with "department policy" and all...but you never know.

Just register it with DOJ. If it is involved with anything high profile it will send up a flag nd you will need to explain how you found it. Otherwise it's yours.

As long as you do what is required you can probably get it back, unless it is stolen...1) contact the pd before 90 days of turning in the firearm and inform them you wish to know the steps in claiming the gun (contact the DOJ to get specific code sections that state it is ok because you will most likely run into resistance). 2) usually involves the placing of an ad in local newspapers for 2 weeks and then bringing in the ads with receipts as proof you attempted to find the owner. 3) successful completion of the LEGR.

Don't do that.

Do this.

Seems that if it was properly obtained it would be registered and traceable. Usually, "found" handguns were discarded for a reason...

Yep. The cops will run the SN and see who owns it. It coulda been stolen from them, etc.

In cities yes. But it is not unheard-of to find a gun, especially a handgun, in the field. Especially in rough and or brushy country. Places where trails cross fences etc. are also likely spots.;)

I claim the gun you found.

It's mine.
