Preferably in Bay Area/Norcal.

preferably as reasonably priced as possible, female. Don't care about show line/lineage, just want a good tempered, healthy line to add as family member and daddy's helper on family security.

any info on good sources/breeders also appreciated!!

Hey Doc,

Not sure how familiar you are with GSs, however this:

...preferably as reasonably priced as possible... Don't care about show line/lineage...

...will generally get you a host of problems related to behavior and bad hips, among other various issues.

Now having said that, give these guys a call: http://www.savegsd.org/index.asp

Not only will you find what you're looking for (daddy's helper), but you're providing a home to a GS that needs one.

I got mine out of Castro Valley, but their website is no longer valid and I haven't had contact in over a year.
Absolutely incredible dog. The best personality of any shepherd I've ever seen. Unfortunately, she had bad hips. So one of these days we're looking at an expensive surgery. But right now she's getting along fine at 20 months. I can pm the last email address if you like.
Hope this helps.

Thanks BV -

Pretty familiar, this will be my third. - why the good health Line wanted, and why I was asking for tips on locals. Both prior were from people and dogs I knew when I was in Idaho, but now don't know many people around this area. I know there are a lot of bad blood lines out there, and breeders that keep cranking out their good looking but not very healthy dogs.

Have a 4 YO and a new born, and really want to get a new pup so it gets socialized into the family unit. I know there are arguments against it, but it has always seem to hold for me and the people I knew. Would rather wait until the new born is a little older, but have the time to really devote to a new pup right now.

There are few different rescue groups - but then worry about the history and health of the dog, and in many of the case the adoption groups that want to do home inspections and interviews. Not sure many of the PETA types would like a behavioral neuroscientist that does rat research and that is also an avid hunter...

Funny how those types usually think the DOG hunting things is 'just nature', but humans hunting is an abomination...

I got mine from my neighbor when he finally decided he couldn't handle it. He's not a purebred, but he's a great dog, I'm sure you'll enjoy yours when you get it.

This person has pups she needs to sell. Reasonably priced, but she's in So Cal.

DocSkinner. You might be in luck. Not sure if your looking for a certain marking or color of a GSD, but my brother has a pure bred white GSD he has to give away, due to the apartment he lives in, (I think its his wife, but thats just me, lol). She is a female, pure white, great temper, well trained, very obedient, and a sweetheart of a dog. She has been spayed, micro-chipped, has had puppy boot camp, (Obedience Training), and protective of her home.

It saddens me to see her leave the family. My brother used to live with us and so did Lilly. I would take her, but our landlord only allows 1 dog, and our black lab is my baby.

She is a pure bred, but isnt registered or have papers, but it looks like your wanting a good family pet/home protection, and she would fit in just great. If your interested, let me know, i think he has a few days to a week before he has to give her away. Oh i forgot her age, she just turned 3 years old this month.

Wow.

Not sure about the purebred part (the tail is a relative giveaway), but that is one FINE looking dog. Too bad about the circumstances.

Edit: How is she around kids? And furniture? ;)

She is great with kids, my brother and his wife have a 5 year old daughter, and she doesnt chew up anything other than her dog/chew toys. In all seriousness, im not trying to pump her up to be a super dog or to pawn her off as a bad dog. She is an awesome dog, if i could keep her, trust me i would.

+1 on the bad hip problems.
My brothers is a K9 officer and has had two Shepards.
Both ended up with hip issues after 8 yrs. Great dogs, both very lovable. Until he turned his lights on.. lol

God if you lived closer to Bakersfield, this dog would have a home.

She is more than worth the few hour drive from Bakersfield. My brother isnt asking for a fee or trying to sell her. He is pretty busted up about having to get rid of her, thats why he couldn't ask for money for his sidekick.

Tail makes me think a little husky or something mixed in - will run it by the wifle unit and see!

DocSkinner

The wifle unit has spoken - she hasn't ever had a dog before, and her friends have convinced her that you have to start with a puppy if you have kids or it just isn't safe.

I learned a long time ago not to argue with wifle units...

I had the same situation. The wife wanted a pup. So we got a very nice German Shepherd pup and she absolutely loves her. It's twice the work of an older dog, but no complaints. I'm biased, but you can't go wrong with a GSD. Ours is the standard black and tan, but I had a white back in the 70's. Both great dogs.
